I've had my EGR unplugged for about 8 months. I figure I should install the blocker plate since I've heard pressure at wot can blow the valve open. I'm wondering if I'll run into problems w/o the fingerstick. I'm about to make the switch to EFI and I won't need the fingerstick then. Is it ok to use the blocker plate on it's own know or is it better to just leave the EGR unplugged for know until I've EFI installed?

I'm also running blocker plate no stick. I only see codes with predator, never a check engine light.

I figured it couldn't be any worse than running the EGR uunplugged like I've been doing but just wanted to see what others have experienced . Thanks for the feedback.

Blocker plate is all that is needed to keep the exhaust gasses from going back to the intake. The finger stick is just a code defeater. I'd say whether you have the EGR plugged in or not put the blocker plate in.

So I have a Diablo Predator v2.02 on order that will be here on Thursday. I would like to put in the EGR block off plate and MBRP 4" exhaust with front pipe. So from what I have read am I correct in assuming that the Predator will be able to turn off or disable the codes DTC & SAS I would get and that I do not need the fingerstick. Just for the record I have a California 2005 LLY.

Thanks,

Jeff

The Predator 2.02 will do the trick. The Finger Stick only fools the ECM into thinking the EGR is still operating like normal. The Predator turns off the EGR test parameters in the ECM. Both give the same result in different ways.

On Federal trucks you can simply unplug the valve and get away with it. There WILL be DTC's set, but no SES or corrective action. I ran a long time like this on my 2005. I even went so far as to run my truck at about 460 RWHP then I installed the plate and saw no appreciable difference in boost, HP, or EGT.

That said, the plate is still a good idea as an insurance policy...

Quick summary

There's a ton of detail here:

http://www.kennedydiesel.com/docs/Duramax_LLY_LBZ_Emissions.htm

To stop the flow of exhaust to the intake one must either:

1) Unplug the electrical connector
2) Install blocker plate
3) Turn off in the programming which is only possible in Custom tuning/EFI Live

To stop the codes that WILL be set:

1) Predator 2.02 modify tune to egr off and install modified tune
2) Fingers Stick
3) DTC's off via Custom tune/EFI Live

Now some say the blocker plate is necessary even if the EGR is programmed to NOT run as the EGR can be "blown" open. I haven't seen any evidence that this is true even at 450 RWHP. That doesn't mean it isn't true, but a good tune has not proven to push it open...

if you just unplug it but dont block it then you arent accomplishing anything (i think) because the exhaust will still get into your engine

so you blocked it and you didnt use a programmer or anything to shut it off..
Does it throw any codes?

I finally installed the blocker yesterday with no stick. Everytime I get in and turn the truck on, I get a CEL. Ok, not EVERY time, but in the 2 days it has been in, I have had to clear it with the Edge more than what I thought I would have to. I didn't want to mess with the harness, but if I get the CEL as often as I think I am going to, I might do it. This is with the Edge set to level 2.

Here I am reading thru this thread and just realized I posted it  I've had the EGR unplugged for a year now w/ no CEL. Put the blocker plate in for piece of mind a few months ago. Seems like there is a litlle less smoke at WOT but it could be just me. One thing to think about now is before I just plugged the EGR back in for dealer visits and now I've got the plate to deal with.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the LBZ's are more finicky than LLY's.

Question on unplugging:

If the EGR is unplugged on an LBZ and it throws a code or SES- then it's plugged back in, will the dealer be able to tell that it threw that code in the past? Will the code go away after the EGR is plugged back in? I've heard that the truck will automatically clear codes after 50 ignition turns but I don't know if that's true...
