I had a set of 35 inch BFG MT on my truck. It snowed about 3 inches the other day. I went up town and it was the worst ride I have encountered. The tires were just plain scary on the snow covered roads. I know they are a mud terrain tire but expected them to be somewhat OK in snow. I have since change them out to a set of BFG ATs.

M/T's are good for snow, but if it's hard packed and icy, you want an A/T. M/T's aren't bad if they are siped, but if not an A/T will be better. Just my .02,

My brother has a wrangler with goodyear wrangler m/t's....he quickly found out that a short wheel base + m/t on icy road in ny = a 720 rotation on the highway...but man can he get through the deep snow out at my farm

I agree with the GY MTR's. I have them now, (although getting bald), but they are not, nor have they ever been any good in snow driving that I encountered. But they sure look good!! :)

A good road snow tire always has lots of siping (cuts in treads). Ussually somewhat a closed tread pattern too...

BFG ATs are "sever weather rated"...check out little snow/mountain symbol cast into sidewall..

Mudders only good in the deep stuff...but how often do you need that?

I had my 255/85/16 BFG MTs (my winter tires)siped and they are the best snow/ice tire I have ever had. I like the MT tread pattern in winter because they don't clog.

On dry pavement they have about the same grip as my BFG AT 315/70/17. Incredible what siping will do!!

What does it cost to get that done?

your tires are tooooo big for winter conditions... They just float. Put some skinny tires on and you can go any where!!!

Duno what it will cost to sipe em but you can buy the stuff to sipe your own tires. Its easy. Just a hot iron thing with a razor blade thingy that will make a few cuts per pass.

Big wide tired with large soid rubber blocks suck in the snow unless its real deep. Best bet for most all around snow conditions is a fairly narrow tire with lotsa groves or siping. Look at a deticated snow tire like the blizaks or the cooper M+S....look at hier tread design and all the sipes in em.

I had 2 sets of Michelin LTX M/S on my 2001 Dodge diesel (90000 miles). They were great in snow / ice conditions (Alberta) but really useless in the mud. Never seen a flat or punture on either set.

I've had both on my truck, although not 35's... the m/ts were great when the snow was loose, as soon as it got packed down I had the same experience as you, quite scary. If it got icy, even worse.

The a/t's aren't the best snow tire, but WAY better than the m/ts.

hmm i love the BF/MTs in the snow!
ice i dont find them any worse or better than the BF/ATs actully i hate the ATs
ive ran BF/MTs for about 3 years now and dont think anything is very good on ice except dedicated ice tires.
siping would be good to do though

Cost me $10 a tire to sipe. It only took the tire shop(discount tire in Rockford, IL) guy about 5 minutes each to do. Like I said earlier, the traction now is tenfold:cool:

Bfg Mt's

I had the same experience with BFG Mud Terrain absolutely terrible in snowy and icy conditions. Have not changed them out but looking at Pro Comp x-terrain or BFG AT's. 315/75/16
