This has probably best ask before but since this is my first desiel I am interested in what is the best engine oil to run. I do my own oil changes and plan on keeping this truck for a long time so I want to use a very good oil. What does everyone recommend. Thanks

I would try and find mobil 1 turbo diesel truck. IMO it's the best! I can't find any around my area so I use shell rotella 5w-40 synthetic. It's good oil as well. I buy it at Wal-Mart.

I like the 5w40 Mobil 1 turbo diesel truck oil too. I get it at a good price and its an excellent fully synthetic oil. I have also used Mobil Delvac 1 which is similar, maybe even the same oil. Its great too but can be pricey. When I havent been able to locate any of the Mobil products I used Chevron Delo (400 maybe?) its chevron's fully synthetic 5w40 oil. I think it says on the bottle that it is for diesel trucks as well. There are many good oils out there. Whichever you use just make sure it meets the appropriate standards (it will say on the bottle. CH-4 etc...) and you should be fine.

Why is everyone suggesting 5W40. The manuals recommends using 15W40 unless your in temps below 0 F.

I use Synthetic Shell Rotella T 5w-40 in my Z28 and my 6.2L suburban.
It is the best for the money, @ $16/gal for a synthetic.

This topic on oil has probably been discussed a thousand times on here. As you will find almost everyone has their preference. I use Shell Rotella 15W-40. I have talked to trucking companies that used Shell Rotella with great sucess. It appears that some of the top oils are Shell Rotella, Delo 400, Mobile One Delvac, Schaffers, Amsoil, Redline and so on. Some use Dino oil and others use synthetic. Probably any of those oils would provide great service. Would one certain oil allow the engine to go alot longer, mileage wise without any problems? I don't think it has been proven. It appears that the key is regular oil changes when needed. Good luck on your decision.

I use the Rotella 15w-40 dino oil now. It's priced very reasonable at Costco or Wallyworld & does a fine job. I do only use the Mobil-1 oil filter though, M1-303 due to it's high efficiency & synthetic fiber media. Like stated previously, you'll get a variety of opinions on what someone considers "best".

5-40

5-40 works better for cold starts & actually can improve mileage a little but for me in Iowa where it gets a little chilly the 5-40 starts very well.

i am happy with amsoil also. its not cold enough for 5w40 mobil 1 and the fuel mileage increase is only 3% on the highway only.

John Deere 15-40 plus 50 good enough for every engine on the farm. Plus I get it in bulk so there's no jugs to mess with and at $8.25 a gallon delivered and pumped into my tank makes it easy for me.
