I have never posted before,so bear with me,i have a 2004.5 lly3/4HD,and the dealer told me that the turbo waste gate was bad, they replaced the turbo. The insides of the turbo were coated with carbon, causing the gate valve to stick. My question is i ran a hyperteck on level 3,and when towing or when i got on it ,it would smoke real bad,but my son's truck would not. If i continue to run in level 3,would i just build-up more carbon? I pull a 34ft 5th wheel at about 11500lbs. I"ved read that a lot of your posting say that your trucks smokes,so i can't be the only one with this problem.By the way,my dearler did not know that i had a ht on my truck,so that is why he did not know where the carbon came from

Are you towing in level 3?

Do you have an EGT guage?

I thought due to the VVT on the LLY's that there was not a waste gate?

Correct...no wastegate on the LLY turbo. Pressure is controlled by ocsillating the vanes.

Bad Turbo

Yes,i towed from NC to NY in level3. I read more on this site, and,no, there is no waste gate,i ment to say the vanes that control the turbo, sorry.the broblem is still the built-up of carbon on the vanes and on the insides of the turbo. Is this from towing in level3? There is no other mods on the truck other than an air-raid intake. As you can see i'm not up on this, thanks.

So then the vanes were stuck/sticking then. I would say this is not related to the HT. I have replaced an 05 LLY VVT for this condition and the truck was completely stock...It is somewhat of a known problem. Just my .02

I have never seen the LLY Garrett have the "6.0 Syndrome", and I run ALOT of fuel through Blue. In normal operation, our engines have exhaust gas temps hot enough to burn any carbon deposits.

While your charger might have failed, a tuner could have only done it if you sustain past factory EGT's, or 1350 deg.

A Hypertech will never exceed 1350. Shouldnt anyways....

I barely saw 1200 climbing long steep hills with 9000 lbs in tow at highway speeds.

I guess the 1400 I got towing on level II was a fluke? I took my foot out of it. The stock tune will go 1400 also.

I've seen over 1350 towing (stock; I have never towed modded). Didn't let it stay there long, though.

I had 1500 on stock tuning. Not sure if having a gauge is a good thing or bad thing. I mean, someone towing with a stock truck can exceed 1500 from my observations and not even know it... But who knows how accurate a gauge is anyway...
