Well, I checked out a lot of older threads for loud engine knocking and it appears that I might have a bad injector. I want to run my symptoms by you guys before I spend the $$ that I don't have ATM. When I start, the engine fires but I have a lot of white smoke out the exhaust and even a little bit coming out from under the hood but only for about 30 seconds. During that 30 or so seconds the engine chugs at high idle and my glow plug light will pop on once or twice before she smooths out at 1000RPM. Once it's smooth, There is a loud knocking that only seems to be on the driver side of the motor and my oil PSI guage goes from 40 to maybe 45 (2 ticks above 40). After 15 minutes later the idle kicks down to 700, the knock goes away and the oil PSI drops just under 40 PSI. I have no significant loss in power or fuel mileage and it runs great after the engine is warm. The oil has 1000 miles on it and it doesn't smell like fuel. I am new to diesels so I'm not sure about a lot of things on the 6.5 yet. I would appreciate any suggestions or feedback.

sounds like you need to check your glowplugs first. you can either take them out and hook them to some 12v juice and see if they are heating ok. or you can check them with a volt meter, I can't remember what the ohms are supposed to be, someone on here could tell you. also you may want to have someone cycle the key on and off while you use a test light to make sure you're getting juice to all of the glowplugs.

At 200k if those are the origional injectors, i would be surprised if they are any good. I have it on very good authority that these injectors become very suspect after as little as 50,000km. Seems that the nozzles are very soft and score very easy..

HOWEVER.. As the previous poster pointed out, its a good time to check out the glows as well, but i would also definatly pull the injectors and pop test them.

I concur on the injectors. If they start to dribble fuel down into the cylinder after shutdown, they wash the iol off the walls. When you first start up, there's a chance that the rings can grab the wall and then you're looking for a new engine.

There's a reason GM says they have a 100,000 mile (160,000 km) lifespan.

You appear to have gotten good service out of these ones. Change 'em while you still can.

I had very similar symptons with my truck on cold starts, white smoke (tons) chugging, loud knocking.

I changed my glows and injectors back in Dec. and the difference is like night and day. No more smoke, no more chugging. It was 20F here the other day and it fired right up no problems and no smoke.

theres a good chance it could be the injectors if you just got the truck you should see if you can find out whether or not the injectors are originals if they are you might as well jsut replace them if you can afford it and skip getting them tested most places charge about $10 an injector for testing or you could build your own tester as some people in here have just that $80 to test them could of bought you 2 new injectors

Thanks for the info. I'll do some testing and get back to you guys to let you know. Pretty safe bet that I will be getting injectors and plugs anyway. I have an airplane that blew a motor so it looks like I won't be able to check things out for at least a few days. At least I have the OT to get the parts I need now! :D

When the time comes I'd recommend delcodiesel on ebay.
$279 for a set of 8 brand new Delphi injectors, $59 for 8 Delphi 60G glow plugs. I also bought the 30mm injector socket for $39. Great customer service and fast a fair shipping.

Thanks again guys for the replies. I looked at my GP's and injectors and they definitely need to be changed. Dave 12 I found delcodiesel on Ebay and I will probably go with them for the injectors. Also, I looked at Heath, Kennedy, BD Power and SS Diesel and saw that they all offered their HP reman injectors? Any thoughts on reman injectors and if it is worth the extra $$ for the high performance injectors? I plan to put an exhaust and an intake on, but not until I fix the essentials first. I'm thinking that if I get the higher performance ones, I would need the engine to breath better than stock cause egt's will be higher. I am also thinking of buying SS "Instant Heat" glows or heath's "Sure Starts". Any thoughts on the aftermarket products I looked at or should I just go with new stock delphi?

The high performance injectors and marine injectors have been discussed quite a bit on here and it seems to be that they really aren't worth the extra cash. those delphis will do just fine, but to each their own. I put in reman bosch injectors from a dealer on ebay that I've dealt with before, I believe his name on there is pumpguy246. No problems so far.

Like g.vaughn said. The "marine/hi-pop/whatever your want to call them" injectors seem to only be of benefit if you've done all the other things (chip/reflash, resistor, etc). To get them on their own is not worth the money.

I've been reading about some problems with the insta-heats (which are the same as whatever Kennedy sells) burning/crapping out. I haven't heard about any problems with the 60Gs other than they require a little more glow time in some cases. I thought my truck started fine before putting the Delphi 60Gs in. It starts twice as fast now.
