Aux fuel filter- why are they installing them??????

I have seen a couple of posts concering adding an second fuel filter and I have a customer with one of these trucks inquiring about it.

What is the reason for the addition of the second fuel filter. Are there problems with the main filter not working properly or is it an accessibity issue?

Thanks

The OEM filters (prior to the changeover to the updated dual pleat designs) were not providing adequate filtration in the particle size range to protect injectors. The new filters are providing better filtration, but at the cost of early loading and frequent changeout. The aftermarket secondaries are being mounted both post- and pre-OEM and are larger and more efficient elements offering not only superior filtration but long filter life while protecting the injectors.

You refer to the OEM double pleated design. When did the OE's go to this filter. This is a brand new truck with just over 1000 miles. Will it have this updated filter design?

Yes, it should. First double pleats were issued in 2004 and the newest filters should be on all trucks since 2005 and there's a one-time filter change recall in progress for 2001, 2002 and 2003 trucks through September 2006.

I installed one on my 2001 Dually for the reason mentioned above, to protect the injectors from debris. In about another 800 miles I will be having the new style filter installed as per the recall, but will continue to use the pre-OEM installed filter kit to enhance protection for the first gen. injectors. Here is a pic of my kit:

It includes a Racor filter (660R), filter head, water separator & wrench, fuel line & fittings, and mounting bracket/rock guard. It is sold by a supporting vendor of this forum and so far I am quite happy with mine.

The other kit that is very popular with the guys on this forum is the Nicktane Kit and looks like this:
