Another OBDII scanner question

2110 Views 20 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Scrufdog
I'm looking at scanners and some support "C.A.N" and some don't. Does anyone know what this is and whether I will need it for my truck?

Thanks,
Dave

That's the Y2K OBD2 upgrade, where each vehicle has it's own little intra-net - PCM communicates with the various intelligent peripherals, including the instrument panel, on the CAN bus.

Severely restricts powertrain swapping or altering - ya gotta have a smart-controller to do anything with it.

DMax is ate up with the stuff, but that's also how they're getting 850hp and 1000ftlbs torque with relatively stock trucks.

Problem is, it stunts livestock offspring, curdles milk, mutates crops - stay away from 'at stuff, it's evil................
check out www.obd-2.com they have a chart that lists what vehicles use what protocols. Yours is probably VPW like mine.

Are you looking for a stand alone scanner or something for a laptop?

Thanks, I'll have a look.

I'm just looking for a scanner that will read and clear codes. I'd love to have something that would do more (adjust timing etc) but don't have the cash to fork out.

Did you have something to recommend?

Thanks,
Dave
the software/cable from obd-2.com is what i recommend to everyone. I use it all the time. It reads standard obd data, as well as the Enhanced GM data. Basically, there are only 6 data feeds I can read with standard obd-2 protocols, but with the Enhanced part of the program I have over 100 hundred more. anything from fuel rate, to transmission solenoid status. It seems most other scanner software out there cant get the Enhanced stuff, but charge the same for it. Digimoto is a popular one that I know cant read enhanced stuff yet, even in their latest beta.

And yeah, obd-2.com cant do timing sets, control transmission, turn off individual injectors (for testing), lock the torque converter, etc.

Probably the best $122 I have spent on the truck
So for $122 you get the cable and all the software? Then you just need a laptop (which I have) to load it onto? Anything else that someone who knows nothing would need to know?

Thanks,

Dave

I appreciate the offer. If I'm ever in Winnipeg and need my truck scanned, I'll be sure and look you up. :)

What scanner do you have? I'm still researching to see what is going to be the best for me.

Dave
So what software do you need to change IP timing? Just curious how to modify IP timing to play with GMCTD's numbers for some "free" HP :)

OH CRAP

what a typo...that software CAN do all that I said.

and yeah, just need a laptop with a serial port...or buy the adapter they offer (like i did) and it works fine
Not much more than a dealer scan, and you don't get a printout - you get to keep the scanner.

You will need an initial scan to get a reference before any adjustments can be done.

I've been keeping an eye out for OBD2 Dodge scantools - that one looks good, but maybe I'll wait for Stefan's GMTDScan OBD2 upgrade.
Dave> Innova 3100 OBD2 code reader, clears codes to, anyone by here, is welcome to it.
Thanks for the clarification ScrufDog! That product sounds really nice. Also pretty reasonably priced for the features!
I bought a cheap scanner off ebay. It will do what I want for now. I'm almost afraid of what I could do with a scannre that allowed me to make changes to my system!

Dave
Be afraid...............be very afraid..................
havent broke mine yet :D

and with the tranny control I can make it stick in 3rd for a dyno run

Be afraid of the cheap scanner or be afraid of what I could do to my truck with one that allowed me to make program changes?
Yes.......
Carcode (OBD-2.com ) is great, FREE updates for ever, works on all GM,
I think it's the best buy out there,
Have had one for about 4 years.... It reads all the data, and allows
TDCO read/set cylinder balance test, and lot's more
I looked at that, pretended to check out, tab came to over 200bucks - what is free about it?
