Cool! I have been somewhat inactive lately here, but I am glad to see that the study is still creating some good discussion and debate......
I must admit here for the first time that I am currently using an Amsoil Ea Air filter. This filter was not on the market when we did the study. I am a huge skeptic when it comes to any aftermarket companies claims. However, the Amsoil Ea is made by Donaldson (the blue media). Donaldson is a very progressive filtering leader. I did a lot of research before I started using it (I was not going to be a sucker like I was when I bought Amsoil's early generation oiled foam....garbage!)
Out of respect for an agreement I made with a filter manufacturer, I will not disclose where I got this info, but I was able to witness the Amsoil Ea filter tested side-by-side with the ACDelco and the Amsoil tested better in every category by a small margine (the ACDelco is so good that there is not a lot of room for practical improvement.
I am unbending on my belief that most aftermarket filters fall short of the filtering ability of the stock paper and at the same time do not give the performance benefits promised. Essentially, overpriced, under engineered marketing hype.
If I am not mistaking, the most recent Duramax's now come stock with a blue Donaldson media filter in a conical, honeycomb configuration. It looks awesome and I am sure performs well. It would be fun to do another side-by-side test with some of this new technology. I am afraid, however, that the next test will not be provided for free! Peace...SPICER
An interesting observation, I recently bought a microscope. I just took a small piece of the Ea filter and an ACDelco and put them under 100X magnification using top-lighting. WOW! The EA nanofiber looks really cool! My crude observation gave the inpression that the Ea uses Less restrictive cellulose paper, but it is covered in a thin WEB of super thin "nanofiber". I could even see super tiny specs of dirt trapped in the webs. REALLY cool to see firsthand. The biggest question would be the durability of the nanofibers over time, but the visual difference between the OE and the cellulose/nanofiber blend is obvious.
It is funny because the first time I tried to see the nanofibers in the microscope I was looking at the clean side of the media and it looked like blue cellulose at 100x magnification. Then I flipped the sample over and saw some thin streaks. Then I shut off the underside light of the microscope and used a tiny flashlight to give "top light". Then the nanofiber web Really stood out! I believe Amsoil has some pictures of this on their website. SPICER
