As you know, I MAY have had transmission failure gradually come on between 145 and 158 thousand miles. About half of my miles involve towing 8 to 10,000 pound, high wind-resistance trailers. I rarely used tow-haul mode except to slow down. Using the tow haul mode made shifting rough and would stick me in lower gears with resultant lower fuel mileage and higher engine rpm.

Also had the practice of changing the transmission filter and just the oil in the pan every 30,000 miles or so.

Would either of these habits contribute to a shortened service life?

Mackin,

Only under trailer load the truck would go into limp mode and "shut down". It's been going on for over a month. Had noticed an increasing cold blooded, balky transmission in the mornings. Also noticed an rpm difference in the gears that was higher than normal. It was almost like it had a gear between 4th and 5th.

Yesterday after hooking up it just would not shift into 5th gear. Had to put it in neutral on a downhill to get it into 5th. First figured it was a trailer brake dragging. Engine seemed fine but it just did not transulate to road speed proper for the rpm.

Two shutdowns on the Pa. Turnpike forced me to pull off. Code of 093 was for 'massive fuel leak'. As many times before, there was no fuel leak - inside the engine or outside. Theory from a GM tech rep. and the dealer techs is the transmission was not using the torque from the engine ( slipping?) and the TCM/ECM computers were shutting things down.

Truck runs flawless without a load. Traded the truck. It's a 'load' off my mind. Now waiting for Eric's opinion. The picture is the old truck still hooked and 'broken' and the new one I'm taking next week.Edited by: captainmal

Larry, congrats on the new truck, We would have liked to have your business on it but I completely understand your situation. I think tow haul is your best friend in your situation, Its possible that the tranny was slipping everso slightly in high gear(s) with the wind resistance your trailers are offering. I know it may not be the most economical, but I feel its a good thing, even when towing small trailers, but it really shines with the big loads that you pull, the grade braking and such.

Worth the upgrade for the crew cab alone if you ask me. I will never go back to a extended cab.
