Truck is a 1979 full size GMC Jimmy that I converted to diesel. The 6.2L diesel engine, transmission and transfer case came out of a 1984 CUCV Blazer. The majority rest of the parts, including the accelerator cable, came from a 1984 Suburban with a 6.2L diesel.
Recently I installed a rebuilt injection pump. While doing the install the accelerator cable became damaged, needing replacement. I ordered two from NAPA and each one was incorrect even though what was ordered was for a 1984 K5 Blazer with a 6.2L diesel. I've know the parts guy for years and it wasn't his problem. There parts book showed the correct cable, but the one that was delivered and what was shown on their computer was incorrect. I then ordered one from O'Reilly's Auto Parts. What was shown on their computer was correct but what was delivered was the same as what NAPA received from their warehouse. I went to a local Chevrolet dealer and was told that they no longer carry the part, but they gave me the Chevy part number (14038644). The Chevy parts guy said what I described to him sounded like an accelerator cable for a gasoline engine. I went back to NAPA and the Chevrolet parts number crossed back to the part that they ordered for me. I was told by NAPA that most of their parts were now being supplied by Dorman and being repackaged with as a NAPA part. Turned out that this was the same for O'Reilly. I then order one from LMC Trucks, and got the same part as from NAPA and O'Reilly's. The length of all the cables was correct, only the ends were wrong.
What I needed has the end at the injection pump with a hole about 1/2 inch in diameter with a rubber grommet. What I got had a hole at that end that was only about 1/4 inch with no grommet. That end would only fit over the outer part of the throttle shaft where the retainer clip goes and block the groove for the retainer clip. (Sorry I don't have any place to cache pictures on line to post or I'd add pictures here.)
Each accelerator cable has a molded stop in the cable at the end that attaches to the accelerator pedal. But the stop on the replacement cable was located in a position that had the injection pump at about 3/4 throttle.
I eventually found a NOS Chevrolet cable on eBay, but I have no idea where to find one in the future. It would seem that Dorman is mistakenly boxing up the wrong cables to sell as what I got, four times, was totally unuseable.
