Accelerator Cable 6.2L

Truck is a 1979 full size GMC Jimmy that I converted to diesel. The 6.2L diesel engine, transmission and transfer case came out of a 1984 CUCV Blazer. The majority rest of the parts, including the accelerator cable, came from a 1984 Suburban with a 6.2L diesel.

Recently I installed a rebuilt injection pump. While doing the install the accelerator cable became damaged, needing replacement. I ordered two from NAPA and each one was incorrect even though what was ordered was for a 1984 K5 Blazer with a 6.2L diesel. I've know the parts guy for years and it wasn't his problem. There parts book showed the correct cable, but the one that was delivered and what was shown on their computer was incorrect. I then ordered one from O'Reilly's Auto Parts. What was shown on their computer was correct but what was delivered was the same as what NAPA received from their warehouse. I went to a local Chevrolet dealer and was told that they no longer carry the part, but they gave me the Chevy part number (14038644). The Chevy parts guy said what I described to him sounded like an accelerator cable for a gasoline engine. I went back to NAPA and the Chevrolet parts number crossed back to the part that they ordered for me. I was told by NAPA that most of their parts were now being supplied by Dorman and being repackaged with as a NAPA part. Turned out that this was the same for O'Reilly. I then order one from LMC Trucks, and got the same part as from NAPA and O'Reilly's. The length of all the cables was correct, only the ends were wrong.

What I needed has the end at the injection pump with a hole about 1/2 inch in diameter with a rubber grommet. What I got had a hole at that end that was only about 1/4 inch with no grommet. That end would only fit over the outer part of the throttle shaft where the retainer clip goes and block the groove for the retainer clip. (Sorry I don't have any place to cache pictures on line to post or I'd add pictures here.)

Each accelerator cable has a molded stop in the cable at the end that attaches to the accelerator pedal. But the stop on the replacement cable was located in a position that had the injection pump at about 3/4 throttle.

I eventually found a NOS Chevrolet cable on eBay, but I have no idea where to find one in the future. It would seem that Dorman is mistakenly boxing up the wrong cables to sell as what I got, four times, was totally unuseable.

Too be expected as these trucks get older, Dorman might want to put a disclaimer on the box" Some Modification Needed"

I have a couple cables but the grommet that goes on the IP end seems to be tough to find and from what I remember Lowes or Home Depot has something in their nut & bolt section that works.

I wish a grommet was all I needed for mine. The outer casing on the accelerator cable broke and I ended up at full throttle going down a neighborhood street. Better at waking me up that morning than my usually pot of coffee.

NAPA had different numbers also. I haven't compared them side by side, so I'm going off what the Chevy parts guy stated, and he also didn't do a side by side comparison.

I got an e-mail back from Dorman, they say that they haven't produced an accelerator cable for a 6.2L in years. Still talking to them.

I purchased the cable from Rock auto for my diesel conversion. it was too short on the IP side and would have caused it to have no idle. I could have modified the bracket to fit the new cable, but I went to the Junk yard and got one from a diesel suburban for $5

good to know. Parted out 2 6.2 trucks, sure hope I saved the cables.

Dorman confirmed that they haven't made any accelerator cables for the 6.2L diesel in ten years. The Dorman part number posted on Rock Auto and elsewhere is for a gasoline powered Chevrolet Blazer, Suburban, etc. So just be careful if you decide to buy new and I know if I see any in the salvage yards I'm going to snag them if I can.

The cable you need should be the ATP Y270 cable... i used it to convert my DS4 6.5 to a mechanical injected 6.5. If your need the cable to be roughly 38 inches thats the one.

The gasoline one will be too short. Trust me i have one now sitting at my shop....

You can order that at Summit Racing, Ebay. I dont think AAP had it or Autozone or O'Reilly's. Just google ATP Y270 throttle cable, its like $23 bucks.

Yes sir! For all 6.2 and mechanical injected 6.5 guys its the only one available. It is a aftermarket cable, but it works perfect with my 94 Chassis.

There it is, ATP Y270. I've never ordered anything from rock auto, like i said i bought mine of ebay for like $23. But depending on Rock Auto's shipping thats what you'll need. Hell im thinking about buying a backup since that part is getting harder and harder to find..
