So I just want to compare turbos, which is bigger, which is more laggy, which is a better single and which would be better in a compound setup? Id like to see some timeslips with both turbos too.

I would check out McRat's Info on the GT42, it's second to none. I'm pretty sure he has Dyno's #'s, 1/4 Miles Times, Top Speed 1/4 Mile, Inducer Size and a whole lot more good Tech Info. As far as the A5K I think it has proven itself. Look at all the D-Max's above 600rwhp on #2 and the charger's they run. Mostly A5K. I think that we will start seeing more GT42's in the near future:) ! I know I'm buying one for my LBZ I'm going to get in 1 hour:D . Casper has the biggest Dyno # I have seen on a #2 D-Max 737hp corrected. He was running GT42.

i have had the BD and the high tech turbos so far, did a best on the BD of 12.26, and never got a track time with the dual fueler and high tech, but would guess maybe a tad faster....

now mcrat feels the gt40 and high tech are very similar in hp, so times would be similar i think....

now for the a5k it seams the guys running it are doing high 11s for sure, some a bit better.... as for the gt42 it is looking to be .2 to .3 better than the gt40... so in my humble opion it would be very similar to the ak5 or have a slight edge on it.....

as for towing i would think that both turbos would have a few issues but with the right driver and tune it would and could work..... water cooled has to have a slight advantage over just oil cooled

I believe Rodger aka farmboystoy ran both chargers. He would be a great person to answer the question as to how they compare.

Are either the ATS or GT-series turbos water cooled??

The GT42 flows 96lbs/min and the A5K is about 82lbs/min. The Garrett also has a better turbine design. I haven't tried either as a single but I would bet the GT42R outspools the A5K primarily because it is dual ball bearing. The turbine wheels are almost identical in dimension but have a different number of blades.

The Garrett is a watercooled ballbearing Turbo.

Are ALL of them that way? On Garrett's website, the only reference I could find was to the GT4088R having ball bearings, but none of them mention water cooling or BB other than that one.

I'm trying to decide on a towing turbo, which is why I ask. Kinda' off-topic here, but thanks for the info/patience.:

i would give the GT42r a big thumbs up as it is obvious it out performs the AK5 by some 50 to 100hp.

It seems most trucks running the AK5 end up after tuning between between 620 and 700, and trucks running the GT42r after tuning run above 700.
I believe exhaust backpressure plays a big role.

I would go with the GT40R if you still wanted to tow. With the proper mods and tunning it can achieve and handle up to 650rwhp. PPE makes a GT40 series install kit. Comes with pedestal, downpipe and all the other hardware needed for install. If I'm not mistaken, I think they can also get you the Charger too. Give em a call and get some prices and any other info you need to make the decision they have great customer service! Hope this helps.:)

Thanks. I briefly brought it up with Dan on the phone the other day, but I usually like to arm myself with a little knowledge before I just blindly follow the advice of others. From what I've seen/heard/read, I'm definately thinking GT40 series, I'm just not sure which trim yet and if the ball bearing upgrade is worthwile for me.

Well sounds like your in good hands:) . I just picked up my new 07' LBZ Ext Cab today. Man that thing moves and the Allison tranny shifts is like butter:) . I know I'll be in the market for a GT42R within 1-2 months cant wait to try one out sounds like a great product. Hope you like your GT40!

I have read all of the GT42r threads, but nobody really compares it to the a5k
Very few folk have run multiple turbo configurations on their trucks. I'm one of the them.

Casper has had 14 chargers, but not an A5000 yet. Will try to test if we can afford to.

But from what my customer data indicates, the GT42R is significantly more potent than the A5000 from what I can tell.

It's fully streetable, but I haven't done the towing tests yet. Gimme some more time. I do not expect it to be a good "all-around" tow/strip charger like the GT40 or HTT are, but it surprised me how flexible it really is.

Throttle response is very good, better than stock IHI or Garrett chargers. Spools very easy at normal DA, and "useable" at high DA's.

I don't "hype" stuff. I base my recommendations on real data and testing, and have never talked anyone into anything. Chargers are not "one size fits all".
