Got a 95 3500 with 6.5 td, dually, 4:10 rear end. Mileage is about 10-11mpg no matter what I am doing. Been thinking about seeing if I can swap in a whole new rear end to lower the RPM at highway speed, yet not so much as to lessen its towing ability. Right now I mainly just tow a single car trailer, but might in the future tow a 2 car trailer. Is there a different rear end for the dually that will give better mileage like I am wanting? What should I be looking for?

Oh yea, a quick check of car-part.com brought up these options to choose from. How do I know what I need to be looking for? Mine is 4x2, regular cab btw:

Stick with the 4.10s if you plan to tow 2 vehicles. IIRC most reported only margional, if any mileage increases with 3.73s from 4.10s, expecially under towing conditions.

Milage seems low, I got 15-16 empty and 12-13 with
a truck camper....

Changed to 3.73, empty Milage impoved slightly,
but worse mpg loaded, the TCC will lock up at a higher Speed50 vs 45 mph. and will unlock/downshift sooner, at 55mph you will shifting for any small hill.

I think you may have a problem that is causing low MPG.
Is the TCC working ( assume Auto Trans ).

Are you sure of 4.10's not 4.56 gears....

I agree with qwest. but I would also consider a 2 speed if your rear end is in good condition. Also Summit sells a rebuild package in whatever ratio you desire.

I got the same truck and watch my mileage , I average 14 in the summer and only drops to 13.5 avg. during the winter . If I really baby it I can get 15.5 but as you can see it doesnt change much . When Hauling my truck camper over at 4000lbs Ive never got worse than 9.8 .

all:
I run 3000-3200lbs, use to get 12.5 to 13.5 mpg,
now after all the modes, best I can get is 12.5 ( 65mph tops )
I think the gears hurt milage on non-interstate,
also I am wondering about the fuel quality, seems to be
worse the last few years, I did get some fuel in Virgina
at an off interstate station, drove around for several
weeks, avg was close to 15 mpg with the TC???

As far as modes, removed the boost fooler a few months ago, seem to be getting a little better fuel milage running
empty, takes a few fill up's to be sure, but maybe it's
the local hess fuel vs the truck stop fuel...

Anyway, should not have changed gears as 85% of driving
is with the Truck camper ( slide-in as they say in Florida )
