Running trouble with a 1997' 6.5 TD chevy 2500, 270,000. Truck started missing a beat every so often a few months ago, now it's running pretty bad. It starts up real good every time, idles a bit choppy and when you give it some gas it goes all over the place and revs up on it's own and then won't rev so good. I pull off and it will go ok on low revs then I try and go faster and it will cut or rev up and it gets worse after about 20/30 mins. there is a fair bit of black smoke too.
I had a garage look at it and they said it could be the IP but they couldn't say for sure, they wanted $2400 to put a new IP on but said that may not fix it. I figured I would investigate myself before I pay all that money and it still not be fixed. I have some experince with older diesels without so many electronics so im not very down with all the codes and buzz words but I figured I could have a look at fixing it if possible. I have checked the lift pump and that seems to be good. I've looked on the diagnostics and other postings, they are pointing towards the IP except for the over revving when I try and give it some gas. Is it fixable for a guy that's used to working on old tractors, could there be some other thing, is $2400 to much to have an IP fitted. Sorry for the long winded post. I'm sure I'll think off something else to say but any help would be much appreciated.. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum, digger also.............

Those symptoms point to a Fuel solenoid failure, particularly if you have no DTC's - 270kmi ain't helpin', either.

There's several threads here with pics on replacing the Inj Pump, search for that, and DS4.

You're looking at replacement DS4, injectors, glow plugs, timing chainset, probably harmonic balancer, acc drive pulley, waterpump, nylon rocker-arm keepers, etc, to get it back in shape - 1500bucks if you do it yourself.

Thanks guy's. You're right 270k is a lot, I had thought about putting a new motor in. thought it could be easier than playing around with this one. Any thoughts? is it a big undertaking or can it be fairly straight forward. does anyone know how likely it would be to find one worth putting in and how much I could expect to pay for one?

You're looking at aroung 5k avg, with 2500 low and 7500 high.

Pull your pan, check out the mains webbing for cracks - if none, 270kmi isn't too bad for a 6.5 Diesel, you just need the pieces I listed above to bring it back from the brink.

There's a few members here with around half a million on the odometer, and counting
