hi yall,
my name is david sims, i have looked at this site as well as other sites and this is my first post here. i have owned my 1996 6.5 3/4 ton long bed chevy since 2002. it was a great dependable truck till 2003 when the ip died. i picked one up at a local rebuilder and put it on. good truck again until 2006. one afternoon i cranked up my truck and it took more time than usual for it to fire up, i got about 200 feet out of the drive and it died. i cranked it back up and again it took longer for it to fire up, but this time it started making a weird noise almos like a bad wheel bearing but it was the motor because it varied with the revs. it also was waaayyyyyy down on power. i creeped on to the house wide open at 25 miles an hour and even slower going up hills. i pulled the codes and one was crank sensor, i put a new crank sensor on but nada, it also had egr codes and timing codes. i then manualy adjusted the ip timing. this gained back a good bit of power but the noise kept on getting worse. i also noticed that when i put the engine under load the noise went away but as soon as i let off the pedal it came right back. the truck pulls like a train but the noise was really bad so i parked it. i bought another truck, a gasser it does all right but i need the old deisel back in action. i know this was lengthy and i apoligize. any and all help would be greatly appreciated thanks david sims

Welcome to the forum, david..............

Pull the torque converter inspection cover, put a socket and large breaker bar on the front crank bolt inside the harmonic balancer, attempt to rock the crank back and forth, should also move the flywheel - if solid, see if you can rock the flywheel back and forth without turning the harmonic balancer.

We're looking for a problem at the front or the rear of the crankshaft - or, both

Post your results.
