Hello all


I have a 1985 M1009 chevy blazer, TH 400, NP 208 t-case, 6.2 diesel, etc. The problem I am having is when I try to start the truck after I have run it for a while, it just grinds. The starter does not want to engage. It hits the flywheel, grinds, I let off the key, and I hear it spin down. Its a 24 volt starter, mil-spec. If i let the truck sit for an hour +, it starts fine 9 out of 10 times. Is it harder to start when its warm? Any ideas would be appriciated! typically when the starter drive does not engage it's because the starter motor is not spinning fast enough.


I think a new starter would solve you problem.

you may also want to check your ring gear (the one that the starter engages) and see if some teeth are broken. also, if the start was replaced... you may want to make sure the front bracket is installed. without it, the starter bolts may break or weaken, also affecting starting. and check the clearance in case you need shims or need to remove shims. my old starter was digging into the valleys of the ring gear.

most likely cause is loose or broken starter bolt and or
teeth missing on ring gear caused by loose or broken starter bolt.try turning engine by hand just a little(make sure key is off) and then try and start it,if it starts probably a bad ring gear
