Hey guys, just wanted to check with some other gas owners. I have an 04 2500hd ext cab 4x4 and can only seem to muster 10-11 mpg. I've been considering a diesel because I do a little towing and then my mpg is 0nly 8-9. Is this about right for a 6.0. I see some people saying that they get 15-16. I don't get on the gas at all either .

Sounds about right. I have the same set-up in a CC. I have gotten 15 mpg on the interstate @ 75mph, but that was all highway miles. Real world driving for me is around 12-12.5 mpg (mix of highway/town). It just doesn't seem to deviate from that unless you're striclty driving the highway. What's funny is that pulling a trailer, even heavy loads, my mileage usually only dips down to 10-11 mpg. I don't understand that, but it does run 2400 rpm at 65 mph. In my experience the 6.0 is a good all-around engine that can handle towing quite well for a small block it just needs some rpm to do it. I live in flat country and I've pulled my 24' stock trailer with 9-10 cows on it with a GCVW of anywhere from 20-24,000 lbs numerous times and it's handled it fine. People may call B.S. but I've done it. Sure it gets up to 65 slow, but once it's there it will hold it fine unless I encounter some hills.

I've got an 04' 2500HD ext. cab 2WD and average about 13mpg all-around. With a best towing 7K of 9.5-10mpg and no trailer-all highway of almost 15mpg. I'd say your figures are about average.

My 06 isn't any better, and it's a reg cab, 12mpg.
But I don't drive a lot of miles, I really like the engine so far.

I have a 2001 2500HD 6.0 regular cab long bed.

Originally I had steel wheels and could only get low 12's in the city. I switched to a set of factory aluminum wheels with the tires at 65PSI now I average 13.5mph in town.

My highway mileage seems to be stuck at 14.9 crusing between 70-85.

I have a 2007 Yukon XL 2500 (3/4 ton), with the 6.0 gasser & 4.10 gears.

I get 15 MPG at a steady 75 mph, 14 MPG in mixed city & highway driving, and 12.5 MPG while towing approximately 6,000 pounds, in gently rolling terrain and with some headwinds, at 70 mph.

The best I ever got was 14.2 on with my 03. Had to drive it like an Old Man. The highway speeds will really get you.

My '01 used to religiously get 13. Once I installed 285s, leveled it, and had a different tune put in, the most I usually see with mixed driving is 12. If I do mainly highway miles and Im not at 75 or above, Ive seen just below 14, but never better.

It seems like the older the truck is getting, the mileage is falling off. Its harder to consistently see 12. Anything that can be done to combat this,,,,besides buy a new truck?

I find it hard to believe that anyone with an HD gets 16 or above with the 6.0. The 4.10 gear ratio just has the highway RPMs too high to achieve any decent gas mileage. 75mph = 2500rpm

Earlier in the thread gear ratios were discussed as though you had a choice. If you have the 6.0 in a 2500HD or 3500, the only gear ratio available is 4.10. Ive seen 3.73 with 6.0 in a 1500HD, but not in any 2500HD or above.
