Hello all,
I have been looking to get into a 5th wheel toy hauler, I have a question for all you already doing so. I have a 2002 Duramax short bed, i have the predator diablo programer with the banks monster exhaust, 6" lift with 35's.

My question is what is the largest 5th wheel I can tow safely with my truck?? I found a really nice 43', but want to make sure i am not going to have any issues towing it with the short bed and my setup.

with that being said, i know nothing about 5th wheels and what i will need as far as a receiver for the bed, brand , size..etc... any and all help will be very grateful!!:confuzeld:confuzeld

The size of the trailer is unimportant. What is important is the weight of the trailer, the pin weight of the trailer and the capacity of your truck. Also, with a short bed, you will most likely need a slider hitch to prevent the front of the trailer from crunching the back of the cab when making sharp turns.

I think you might have a problem with a 6" inch & 35" tires and a 5th wheel. They aren't made to ride at that height. You want them to ride level.

Yes, pin weight, as well as your gross weight will be determining factors and I agree that the lift is probably going to be an issue with a 5th wheel. The other issue with a heavy trailer is stopping it and keeping it within speeds on the mountain grades. An exhaust brake is almost manditory.

The Heartland trailers are the only ones I know of that have an 88 degree turning ability. There are probably others but I have no issues with a short bed and sharp turns.

I agree this is by far going to be your biggest problem, getting the rv to ride level. I've towed with a short bed for 12 plus years and never used the slider hitch, last year when we purchased our toy hauler I went to the husky 26K with no slider and still have had no problems.

Whoever you buy the 5th from should be able to tell you the size of the hitch you'll need. I have a short bed (2005 Silverado 2500 HD) with a Reese slider. Never had to use the slider. That depends on how the front of the 5th wheel is constructed. I have a 2006 37' Keystone Sprinter. Even on very short turns, I still have a couple of inches of clearance between the cab and the end cap without using the slider. I have seen other rigs where even using the slider, they have problems. Once you decide on which 5th wheel you are going to get, try to find out from other owners about turning radius issues. Should be able to get that info on various web sites ie. this one, RV.net, etc.

They should, but my experience with RV sales people is they will tell you anything to sell a unit. See this kind of thing on the trailer sites all the time.

Thanx for all the reply's!! The trailer I was looking at is a private owner, not a dealer. I will ask about the pin weight. and do some reading on the links ya'll provided.

The trailer is a 2014 Tesla, I found this if this is what your talking about for pin weight??
..please excuse my ignorance, but I will learn!

I talk to a retired engineer from GMC and he said ideally, on my 2007 3/4 duramax, I need to keep the pin weight below 2400-2500 with good tires, a couple or three people in the cab and a normal about of tools and other stuff. Looks like way too much pin weight and trailer my man.

Pin weight and hitch weight are the same dog. GCWR (gross combined weight rating) is the truck manufactures rating for both the weight of the truck and the weight of the trailer. Yours is somewhere around 22,000 lbs. Since the truck weighs about 7,000, your have about 14,000 trailer weight to play with. If it were me, I'd keep the pin/hitch weight of the trailer below 2,500 pounds. 2,000-2,200 would be better.

with that pin weight your in 1 ton dually territory, not a 3/4 ton.

Look inside your driver side door frame and you will see by the numbers posted there that this trailer is WAY beyond your truck's rated capacity. It's GVWR is more than my 2015 dually GCVW rating is. You either need to drop down a lot on the trailer weight or upgrade to a lot heavier truck like a 4500/5500 or 450/550.

Guess I need to find out what is the biggest toy hauler/brand I can safely tow with my truck and is the best setup for my needs...bummer I really liked that toy hauler..:(... oh well lot's more reading...
