I just purchased an 01 2500 and the original owner installed a 5" exhaust. I don't know the brand and I'm not sure if he removed the muffler, I do know its a turbo back ystem. The problem is the drone is really bad in the cab. Is there anything that can be done other then removing the system and replacing the factory or a 4" system? I have an edge with attitude but really do not plan to run it about level 3.

Lennox69,

Thanks for the response. I do need to look under there and see what was actually done. Just a guess ... he probably had it installed locally and if it does have a muffler its probably a magnaflow. If so, can you recommned one that would be less loud?

Sell it to me that will take care of it:D . No really some people think some are too loud, while others call them quiet. I want loud, 5" loud! So if your looking to get rid of it, i'm interested.

I actually had less interior drone at lower throttle and a cruise up to 75 or so with no muffler. Muffler design has ALOT to do with drone.

Also make sure the exhaust pipe isnt touching anything ;)

Also look into the weight deal hanging on the exhaust. Been quite some talk of it in the past. My help if you have a resonance problem.

Also were are your exhauts pointing? Does this happen durring a cruise or when towing or what?

The exhaust exits right behind the right rear tire. To be honest it is present slightly at idel to very loud but not deafening when cruising at 65mph. I haven't towed yet but would assume its going to be there and maybe louder with the load on the motor. I call it droning but basically its a very low freq continuous resonating rumble.

Also, while I had it out for lunch I looked under and it does have a muffler.

Ever been in a car with flowmasters? Is it resonance or just the drone of loud exhaust? Resonance is more with muffler design and can be helped with the weight deal. A drone I would more call just loud exhaust ):h Can be delt with in the muffler or adding one.

Yes when adding a load your will probably notice it more.

Probably time to see what you have for a muffler(pull it off too if it can be installed either direction and you may get help from turning it the other direction depending how it was installed. Note if its 5" in and out or what......

5" exhaust

I too have a drone or buzz. It varies with the engine load and rpm. It bothered me at first but now I hardly pay any attention to it. The power available is more important.

Aside from replacing your muffler, or applying the weight deal, per ratlover's suggestion, you could search for a resonator to put in line with your muffler. That should reduce exhaust noise. Just a thought.

Well, I took the truck to the local truck performance shop and found out a couple of things. One, its a 4" system not 5", second, its a cheaper multi segmented product of unknown origin and last, one of its joints was leaking real bad ... right under the cab. They welded it and now its quite a bit quieter.
