2006 aftermarket radio install question

I just bought a used 06 Duramax for a work truck and want to install an aftermarket radio so I can have BT and iPod integration. Will be fairly easy since it has no bose, no onstar, and no steering wheel controls. However, every single radio that Crutchfield lists for a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD says that I will have to cut a metal bracket out of the dash. Is this true? If so, how hard is it to do?

If it's a single DIN, there's no cutting required.

I don't know why they'd change anything from a 2005 to 2006, so I'll throw this out there.

On mine (2005), there's a PLASTIC bracket that interfered with my DOUBLE DIN Pioneer. Took me about 3 minutes with a Dremel to ditch that bracket.

I had a Kenwood in my 07 Classic (same as your 06) and didn't have to do any modifications.....

If you're putting in a double din radio, there is a piece that should be cut. It's just a hard plastic piece. The factory radio had a little plastic nipple that slid into the square hole. You can get away without cutting it, but the new double din radio probably won't sit back all the way. Mine had 1/8" or so that it seemed to push the dash bezel out. Plus cutting it out gives you more room for the wiring harness connections.

That's not my picture, but gives you an idea. Didn't cut any metal, just the plastic piece in the back horizontally flush with the base. It's riveted into the metal support behind it too. (That metal bracket is a dash support, don't cut that.) Might have to notch out the plastic ears on the left and right as well.

Dremel, cutoff wheel, and a few minutes should take care of it.

Bear, that's precisely the photo I looked for when posting. And yes, I had to notch the ears on the lower corners of the hole as well. Had I been thinking, I would have taken before and after shots while I was doing it.

Just installed a single din into my double din 06 2500hd same as yours. Walmart has the adapter kit fits beautifully (no cutting) 17$ here in canada. Also bought their intregation kit for 60$ to maintain the chimes and what not. Same price if not cheaper than crutchfield and I didnt have to wait for shipping....hope this helps

07 classic GMC Duramax

I'm having trouble figuring out what I'm support to do about having Bose. I just bought the pioneer x4500bt. I'm looking to figure out what harness I need and mounting kit I need and also steering wheel control I need. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you go to crutch field's website you can search for that radio, your truck and it will tell you what harnesses you need for onstar, xm and the steering wheel controls.
Don't skimp on these as the cheap ones have a long history of creating all kinds of gremlins and issues. Spend the money and get the best so you aren't going back in there later and rewiring things. The harnesses are anywhere from $75-100 per.

This is some real words of wisdom. I lived that dream, all kinds of issues. Bought PAC interface and problems immediately disappeared.

bump up this old thread. I'm looking for any additional guidance, video, pics on this "bracket" that needs to be cut. I'm prepping to install a double din pioneer.

Google it. I'm sure you will find what you are looking for. In my pickup there wasn't much that needed to be removed. It's not a bracket as I had envisioned. It's more like a little shelf tab. If you can see the back of the oem radio you can see where the radio is short in length and needs this little "prop".
Mine was out in 10-15 seconds tops. Literally took longer to clean up the mess than it did to make the cut.

I put a JVC in last year and there was nothing that needed to be cut. It fit fine and the one that I put in there is a double DIN chassis.

Yeah, it's really straightforward. I just did the 'test fit radio, figure out what preventing it from going in enough, remove radio, trim that part, repeat until radio fits in the whole way" technique. I would suggest doing this without the the intermediate harness (so it's just the radio by itself).

Crutchfield said I'd have to cut my '05 to install a Kenwood double din. I didn't cut anything. It fit perfectly. There's plenty of room to the drivers side and behind the radio cavity to stash wiring and the adaptor. I ran the iPad wiring to the glove box.
