Hello guys, I have a friend who runs a 2005 lly and is getting ready to trade it in, we have talked about him giving me his cp3 pump because mine has a valve issue. Will his pump work on my truck? thanks for the help.

If you swapped the FRPCV it would work

got my 02 lb7 cp3 off, now comes the 05 lly pump

So tonight I got my cp3 pump out of my 02 and its on the bench awaiting to be installed on my friends 05. My question is does anyone know for sure if the sensor on the back of my 02 cp3 needs to be swithed with the 05 cp3 sensor? I would like to know before I spend another 5 hrs on installation to find out I have to do it all over agian. also, if anyone has any other helpful tips on this adventure please fill me in as that thing was a pita to get out! thanks agian,
Josh

If you swap the valve, you are keeping your issue and wasted you time if I am understanding your issue correctly. You have the idle surge and the unsteady rail pressure.

Okay so while that makes sense, you would be correct. However will the valve on the 2005 pump work in my truck? I guess if it doesnt then the best thing here is I will have a newer less mileage cp3 pump. I really hope someone can tell me wether I have to swap the valves or not. Thanks agian.

What issue are you trying to fix? What is the diagnosis?

No offense, but I pity the poor SOD who buys a 2005 LLY with a screwed up 2002 LB7 CP3 pump and regulator.

Good luck.

Call the GM dealer and see if the part numbers are the same. If not, then you likely have a different electrical circuit and or plug connection. I think the mounting is the same. Just tell them you have a spare from an old truck sitting around and need to know if you can swap them. Hate to say it, but it may be a "try it and see" other than checking part numbers against one another.

I just spoke with gm parts and they said the regulator on the back of the cp3 pump is the same on 01-04 but has a differant part number than a 05. He also said he didnt know if it would work or not but he knows they have differant part numbers. I might have to actually go and look at both of them to see the differance, maybe I will be making my own connectors??

I just spoke with eric at merchant and he said they will not work, atleast to there expierience. So at this point i think im going to get it tested and possibly just purchase a new regulator from gm if needed. Diesel specialties of omaha said they can bench test the pump so i think im gonna have them do it. While I wait is there anyway i can test the actual regulator on the back of the pump while i have this out, like i mean any electrical test i can do?

The regulators are the same in every way EXCEPT the way the plug is positioned. If you had the room, you'd be fine. Its just that the plug configuration will prevent it.

If you were doing a second CP3 install, you could use either regulator as long as it dont hit the feed line. The operation of them is exactly the same other then that though.

wont fire

Well just got the cp3 installation done but now i cannot get it to start. I ended up putting the old cp3 pump back on and not using the 2005 pump off the lly motor. Anyways, i pumped and pumped and pumped the primer for over a hour with about the help of 6 guys and i cannot for the life of me get this thing fired up. it wont even hickup at all, nothing just crank crank crank. i read on a previous post that a guy used a shopvac to pull vaccum on the filter and then it fired right up. Is this logical? Thanks guys almost done.

Hope you were very careful not to get dirt or contamination in the pump while it and the regulator were off.

Make darn sure you have a good bleed. Still nothing get a scan tool to read actual vs desired fuel rail pressure.

bleeder screw?

When im trying to pump the fuel filter, does the bleeder screw need to be tight(closed) or unscrewed(open) to acheive the best results? Like I said in my previous post I pumped and pumped and had no luck.

Wow

Please unscrew the black plastic bleeder screw, don't remove it, and pump the primer until fuel comes out from around the screw. Tighten it, and start your truck. Then thank me for not taunting you for priming with the screw tight.
