hello im new to this forum but was wondering any exsperiences in towing large trailers.

i bought my 2005 chevy silverado 2500hd diesel w/ allison trans and absolutely love it!

here is my question now, i am in process of purchasing a 38 ft enclosed gooseneck rated @ 15,600 gvwr and 3/5,200 lb axles ill be carrying my race car and tools which should amount to about 6000lbs which should be fine for this size trailer, but will the truck hold up to this? or should i step it down a bit\? i dont want to have to kill my truck, but any exsperiences with big goosenecks hauling such a large load? what upgrades would you recommend other then the intake/exhaust chip since it has been done.

how is the ride as well? i have the std 6 ft bed

thanks guys for all your help

Hey parks
welcome to diesel place:cool:
Let me start off by saying, I'm a landscaper by trade.
So far, I've hauled aprox. 3 yards of topsoil and pulled my skidsteer wich weighs 7500 Ibs. I can travel @ about 65 mph and no problem. But I normally tow @ 60 just to be safe.
So with my experiance, I would say it should'nt be a problem.
good luck

thanks for replying, i have a 25 ft lighting and it weighs about 6500-7200 lbs and it tows that like a champ!!! but moving to almost twice its size, im concerned about the ride quality and wear and tear she gonna be put through. i love her, so i want to be sure she gets the right stuff before..

i think the new trailer w/ everything in it be prolly in the range of 12k-15k with a air ride hitch. but i heard horror stories about the egt's skyrocketing that kind of load. in the brochures, it states it can handle 15,400 and a gcwr @ 22,000 l lbs.

what states on paper is irrelevant on what personal experiences have with big haulers.

is there anything else you guys recommend in getting so she'll ride and drive better, it will be going cross country totaling about 11,000mi

In hot weather, on long grades, you'll want to watch the temp guage.

If you're going up over the mountains at certain conditions, some of the 05 LLY's will overheat towing rated loads, particularly if accompanied by a lot of wind resistance such as enclosed gooseneck.

Some have no problems (driving style, wind resistance, temps, load, etc) and some do. Definitely use tow/haul mode on hills - it keeps the RPM's up, and you get converter lockup in the lower gears to reduce heat output from the tranny.

Let's hope you don't but if you do have problems with overheating with legal loads at highway speeds, go complain to your dealer. They will try some stuff and it probably won't help much.

If they can't fix it, and won't do any more for you, you can install your own cooling system mods for about a 1000 where users have reported excellent results, or as last resort you can try and sue GM for a buyback

Except for that above possibility, the truck should easily handle the load you're planning on pulling.

Check the pin weight, that's the weak point with 3/4 ton trucks...they'll tow anything, but can't take the pw and stay within ratings.

no problem towing up to 15k. I pull 12k and can pretty much go as fast as I like. a fiend pulls almost 15k and keeps up pretty well. the biggest problem any truck has is the increased frontal area with the load.

sounds good thank you for all your help guys. i really appreciate it. locally i have alot of guys to work with, b&m will be taking care of the cooling issues for me. i just figured it wouldnt need it since it does so well already. but to this date never had any issues with the overheating problem some get i guess she is one of the good ones. plus, i bought her from a local dealer ive been working with for 9 years since i never had anything but chevys in our family. so if i had any problems they would take care of it. no need to sue.

crossing my fingers, hope she does well on the road thanks again

My rig is in the sig. . .

Just got back today from a 10-hour tow back from Glamis.

I strongly suggest the aftermarket fuel tank for the longer rigs. . . Don't want to have to pull that thing off in the city for fuel.

I tow a 14,000 lb 40' 5th wheel with my 2500HD without any trouble. I do have to watch my kingpin weight as I am close to the GVW. As long as you stay in the ratings of your truck, you will be fine. I do check the mirror every now and then to make sure my coach is still back there.

My suggestion would be to start with what you have and go from there. I tow heavy and in the process of adding some air bags due the fact that I have set this D/A (in signature) on the suspension rubber bumpers a few times and don't like that. Once you tow a few times you will have an idea on what is needed. Make sure trailer brake system is top-notch including your controller.

nice trailer.

I pull a 14,000 lb 12' dump trailer with a pintle hook and I sure wish I had a gooseneck hitch. It is a bit of a handful to pull somedays. The weight does not seem to be a problem (lost of power and brakes) but the tongue weight is definately pushing the limits. I really should upgrade the factory receiver. As long as you balance out the weight and watch the tongue weight it should be fine. I have heard about some of the LLYs having cooling problems though. You might want to look into that. My temps have always been great on my LB7 and my LBZ.
