Once in a while this happens on engagement, let up then its ok. I heard there was a service bulletin on this. anyone else have this issue? Truck has had no other issues whatsoever at all. 90,000 miles.

This's a fairly common issue with the LB7's at least; mine has 102,000mi with original starter and batteries, and does it probably once every 50-80 starts. I haven't seen a service bulliten yet, but I'd like to if there is one.

There're apparently two issues that can cause it; chipped flywheel teeth or a worn starter (bendix gear specifically). Hopefully its the latter, because new starters go for $100-200 on eBay, and 2-4 hours to install. Flywheel of course, would be a bigger issue.

When my truck was in for injectors (~99,000mi), I asked them to take a look at it; they found the flywheel was fine and of course couldn't replicate the condition in the shop, so, I'm basically SOL now that warranty is up if it turns out to be flywheel.

How many miles on your '01? I'd assume more than 36,000; the starter's only covered under initial warranty, not engine.

its a solenoid-shift starter so the bendix might just be sticky or have some gunk in it....either that or the delay between the solenoid-shift mechanism and starter engagment is off a little.

my truck has only done it once, and never did it again, no idea why...

Mine did it with 2 starters. Only grinds about once every two weeks. Finally got POed and changed the flywheel. The old one looked the same as the new one, perfect cond. Hasn't ground now for a year and a half. Go figure??

I have a 01' and mine did this as well, I bought a starter off ebay and changed it myself, it still did the same thing......so then i brought it to a mech, he said it was the flywheel....so $1800 later i brought the truck home, the next day it did the same thing..... I was PIS$ED! Brought it back to the garage, he then said the new starter i bought off ebay for a deal was the problem.........he then changed the starter again.........haven't had a problem since........i think originally the starter was the problem and the one I bought off ebay was still no good. I paid 90.00us off ebay, and the GM price for a new starter is $1100.00cdn, so go figure. My wife has been PO'ed at me ever since.....said i made a bad call for buying off ebay.....I thought I was doing the right thing by trying to save some money...ended up costing me alot, Do not trust everything on ebay...........

My starter did that since augest when I bought it. It would turn the starter but wouldnt engage. Made a grinding noise. Checked the ring gear it was all good. Finally this last saturday I decided I was gonna change it. Called the dealership they wanted $1075 plus tax canadian. So I called autoelectric and got a reman for $220 +tax with lifetime warranty so I was happy. Replacement was simple disconnect batteries 8mm and 13mm nuts on starter wires. and 2 15mm mounting bolts. One exhaust clamp and starter was out. I'd say it only took 1hr total to R+R it with air tools. Look at aftermarket for a starter they come with warranty and are way less $$.

For the cost involved I feel like just leaving it since it seems to be a hit or miss on it actually fixing it all together anyways. For a once in a while problem I cant see spending the extra buck.
