Hello I am new to this forum and just trying to help my dad out. He has had some problems with his duramax as it has been completely shutting off while towing a trailer. He took it in and they said that it has a blown turbo because of the hypertech which I thought was only a very mild tune? If anyone else has had this problem please tell me what the outcome was. Thanks

Can you list all the mods in the truck? Did he have a pyro hooked up? What were the temps when towing? How did the truck completely shut down? Does it run after it shuts down? More info please:D

Here are the mods:
Hypertech- Most power setting.
MBRP Exhaust
Intake- Not sure what brand

He has owned the truck for 6 years and he only has like 50k miles on the thing. While he was towing up a small hill the motor just cut out kinda like a limiter when you go past 100mph and it would only do 5 mph. There is nothing crazy on the truck and Chevy blammed it on the Hypertech which I think the turbo just has seen better days. I just came on here to see if anyone else has had this problem and I doubt it was the hypertech. Have no clue what a pyro is? What is Team Hertz?

Simple explaination,

A pyro is a temp probe mounted in the exhaust manifold and wired into the cab and used to monitor the exhaust gas temps so that when towing or really getting down on it you can see exactly what temp you are running so that you don't destroy your turbo.

a set of gauges(pyro-exhaust temp, boost-pressure in intake manifold) help when you start to mod engine. good for diagnostic's also. they saw hypertec and use it for easy out, hypertec is supposed to be safest power adder. how long has it been since air/fuel filter's changed, did engine smoke bad. might try pulling hypertec off(always before going to dealer) and take to another dealer. hypertec dosen't change mph limit(95mph) so that could be what it was, 4tons plus towing trailer not to good going that fast.

This same thing happened to me twice this weekend. Installed Hypertech stage 3, pulling an empty trailer running down the highway. Half way up a little hill it shut off, kind of like it does when you hit the mph limiter. Then it picked back up and ran jus fine. Don't know what the hell was going on.
