So the other day my truck did something a little funny it wouldn't shift into second gear when the truck was initially driven. Ie I would have the shift lever in 3rd and I would gradually accelerate and expect a shift around 1700rpm but it didnt happen. When the rpms got up to 2000 I stopped on the road because I knew something was up. I accelerated again... the same thing happened. On the third try I accelerated to 20 mph rpms around 23-2400 and let off the gas and the truck shifted into third. I have started my truck twice since this happened and it happened then too. However after that first hurdle of not being able to shift my truck will shift into second all day long. Also every other gear works fine it is just second that is the trouble gear.

All three times it has been when the truck was completly cold and it has been around 15-20 degrees outside where I live. The truck has had a garage spot for about 6 months out of its entire life so its not like it isnt used to the cold. Transmission fluid is still red, not burnt and has the proper amount of tranny fluid. Could the transmission just be cold or is this a good reason to go get a duramax? Any help would be appreciated. thanks

I'm thinking it is a sticking shift valve in the valve body. It's shifting, so the governor is working, maybe a quick adjustment on the TV cable will help, but I'm leaning towards a shift valve. You said the trans fluid is red and smells fine, but when was it's last trans. service? A clean filter and fluid could help this out.

BTW, it should be a 4L60 not a 4L60E, the E came out in '94 or '95, no TV cable and shift solenoids control the shifts.

According to the manual it is an "E" for the longest time I thought it was a 700r4 and then a 4L60 but since the book says otherwise Im just following it. I never have looked at the id on the tranny though to find out for sure. The fluid an filter was changed almost 10,000 miles ago and I change it right around every 25k but I will look into the shift valve and cable. If it is the valve that would probably require a tranny tech wouldnt it?

It's one of those things that when they changed the tranny names, the independents and general public still called it a 700. Just like when the 700R4 came out, it was commonly knowns as an 'overdrive 350', or the 4L80 is a 400 with an overdrive:rolleyes: old people.

If it is a valve, the valve body can be dropped and the valve removed and cleaned or replaced, BUT there are little balls above the valve body that are easy to loose and hard to keep in place. Whithout a manual, you will not know where they go and if you don't get them right, then you have a whole new can of worms to deal with. I don't know for sure, but you may be able to pull the valve without pulling the valve body. These are more for a true tranny man to answer.

If overdrive works okay when cold that should rule out the servo, since the band is used in 2nd and 4th. It would seem that it must be a sticking shift valve. Hopefully nothing is making metal causing the valve to stick. I think the 4L60E started in '93. It is easy to tell, see if it has a cable going to the trans from the throttle. The E has no cables, just one big electrical connector.

I checked today it is one big electrical connector then double checked. Also after the first few times my truck as done this it has stopped for the past few days so not for sure on it now. It is a 92 because of the letter N in the vin. But it never ceases to amaze me as to what parts this truck has on it.
