1/8 mile results. What went wrong

2020 Views 43 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Texasmax
I went to the local 1/8 mile track today to run my truck for the first time. The temp was 45-48 not really any wind and bright and sunny, a nice day for racing. I have some questions about my times. I know mcrat ran wendy at LACR and got an 12.92 in the 1/4 or roughly an 8.2 1/8 mile LACR has a high elevation so I was expecting at least an 8.5-8.2 at my 669ft track elevation, no problem but these are about the best times I came up with. My truck is bone stock performance wise except the mcrat race tune. I am wondering if I could have picked up a few tenths from a lift pump or a new trans or something I am just missing. I left the line at about 2100RPM's every time and didnt get much wheel hopp I was always in tow/haul and 4x4 truck was full weight with no tail gate, I know my reaction times arent great nor my 60' but lets hear your suggestions. Elevation 669 Ft. here are my times. Oh yeah, for whoever is interested my completely stock tranny held up very well through about 15 passes, with no shifting issues at all

Yes, lift pump(s) and a trans/converter would help your times. I hope your 60 gal RDS tank wasn't full too because that would have had a big effect on your times also.
no it was empty and the main tank was only a little over 1/4 full. Those are the things that I thought would make up the difference, but do you think this would make that big of a difference? Also what are your opinions on my times on a completely stock truck? Thanks, and keep em coming
Running a mid 8 sec 1/8th on a stock trans ain't so bad.

From your MPH, I'd say the 4-5 shift was hating life.

My truck, before the lift pumps, ran pretty consistently around the 9 second mark at 75 mph in the 1/8th. That was also with a stock transmission and nothing removed from the truck on stock tires with 60' times around the 1.9 range. I can't say for your truck, but I'm sure the pumps will help me because it was falling on it's face on the big end with the edge turned up all the way. Hopefully I'll be able to get a good transmission before the summer, but if not I'll have one by this time next year for sure.

edit: My times were run at a track with elevation similar to LACR.
McRat, the trans seemed to shift fine for the most part but sometimes it would lag between 4-5. good call. I wasnt sure if it was a trans problem or if it was running out of fuel for a second, and here I thought I had some freak of an allison tranny.
Hey Carcraft not sure if your running in tow haul or not I lost around 3 to 4 tenths in the 1/4 without it, Im running a [email protected] before trans work [email protected]
Those are not bad times at all and with a stock tranny too.imo pretty impressive.
yeah I was in tow/haul the whole time never even took it off. I guess I just set my goal to high, thanks for the confidence boost everyone, now I'm thinking I didnt do too bad. I wonder if i could have done better if I would have clamped the springs?
ok I went to the same track again today and ran some 8.3's and 8.6's the only change from last week is the TTS lift pumps. I tried running with the lift pumps on and without them running (fuse pulled) and didnt notice any drop in rail pressure. shouldnt I notice some drop in rail pressure with a 500 hp race tune and no lift pump running. and second I now have about 30 passes on the tranny and it is running good sometimes shifts a little slow buy its ok for the most part shouldnt it have limped by now? any thoughts
Never limped mine so I just did a 1057 converter and transgo jr, deep pan, and transfer case brace and waiting for it to give out on me.
ah ha now thats what I want to hear. at least im not alone what kind of power do you think you are putting out and how many miles on your tranny and do you beat on it
With the old setup I made 450 rwhp with the power pup and 509 with small shot of nos, Have made 20 or so 1/4 mile pass on stock trans think trans had 6,000 miles on it when we did converter and shift kit fluid looked just like new no clutch or metal in pan or on magnet, I beat the hell out of it everyday truck now has 9,800 miles and 7 months old, I have the PPE Hot+2 set on level 6 went to level 3 last week for 2 days didnt like the lower power now on big tune again, by what Dan at PPE says it should have over 530 rwhp. When I used a 1/4 calculator I entered my truck weight and driver which is 6900lb and the 1/4 time one says around 511 on old setup so it is right with what I layed down on the dyno.
Are you maintaining commanded rail pressure without lift pumps? If so you won't really notice a difference with them on.

On the transmission question. I have a 100% stock transmission. I dynoed my truck a couple of months ago and it showed almost 480 hp. I beat on the truck too much and have around 20 boosted launches at the track. I have almost 27,000 miles on the truck. I have had the edge since about 15,000. I run with the edge turned up all the way most of the time. I have yet to have the truck limp. It still shifts great, but I overpower the converter big time. When I'm at full throttle if it the converter isn't locked my RPMs don't drop below 3k.
wow this is great I guess you dont ever hear all the stories of guys that run that kind of power every day on the stock tranny all I ever hear is "I limped my tranny" thats why I thought I should have limped it shortly after running the race tune especially with all the boosted launches. I am about to head to the dyno today and see what kind of numbers it puts down. Yes I can keep comanded rail pressure just fine without the lift pumps is that weird or what shouldnt it have a hard time without lift pumps and supposedly 500hp at the wheels or do I just have a strong cp3
Maybe a combination of a strong CP3 and good programming. I'm interested to see what kind of numbers you put down on the dyno.
Remember guys, you don't need to have it limp to be hurting the trans.

My 04lly never limped in stock form and I never ran anything over a predator on 100hp. Upon disassembly at 5000 miles, the clutches were hurt pretty bad.

On my first built one in the 04, it never limped either after running major sh!t through it and upon disassembly the clutches/steels were fried.

Just a reminder, nothing is free;)
8.3 is just awesome for so little mods.. Great times..

Yeah, I'm sure my clutches are looking pretty bad, but I'll run it for a while longer anyway. If I limp it I'll turn the Juice down a little. I'm going over to the desert this summer, so if i don't have a built trans before then I'll be able to do it when I get back for sure.
that sucks you guys have the track this time of year. it is 15* here with a couple months before the track opens. can't wait though!
