I think I found my coolant leak on the driver side rear by the oil filter extension. It appears to be coming out of the bell housing area just above the oil filter and leaking down from there. It only leaks when its real cold out side I think. It started about last week leaving a small puddle and blowing all the way back the transmission crossmember on the driver side. How hard is it to remove and or replace the rear engine cover.I changed the waterpump about 1500 miles ago. I assume the trans and transfercase have to come out. Or is there a hose on this side or something else that could leak? Truck has 163,000 miles and I dont know the history on it. I am scared to pressure check it for fear of faster failure.thanks Cleve

Did you check the coolant hose to the turbo? Mine was dripping. See Here

I going to pressure test it tomorrow and check for any and all leaks. The motor is dry every where but just above the oil filter. It blows back all over the front drive shaft and transfercase and crossmember. I checked the top of the motor in the valley area and its dry. I was hopeing that it was just a hose. But I dont think theres one in that area.Cleve

rear cover removal help

If rear cover/coolant seals is source of leak your in for a full day worth of
work and than some. To remove cover both the lower and upper oil pan
need to be removed as upper oil pan seals to rear cover. Also if your truck
is 4wd front differential would need removed. If your completely unable to
tell for sure and leak is behind bellhousing you just may have to remove
trans and flexplate to get a better look. Also could try coolant dye and
blacklight but would need to run engine awhile with dye to circulate to
leak area(just a note:if coolant is dexcool get dye for dexcool or else
coolant will turn highly green-very hard to flush out). Also take a
good look around oil filter adapter and oil cooler as several areas
could leak there. Also take a good look at water pump outlet pipe
to oil cooler as there is a seal there and is right above oil filter
adapter and could possibly blow back while truck is moving. Hopefully pressure test will help show source of leak. Good luck.

Well I pressure tested it and it appears to be leaking from the oil filter adapter that bolts on to the block and the rear engine cover. Is there coolant there that cools the oil on these diesels? I couldnt see exactly where it was coming from didnt have a mirror with me. It drips off from the bolts where it mounts to the rear cover directly next to the oil filter. There are 3 or 4 bolts directly above the adapter and 3 or 4 bolts over on the block. How hard would it be to remove this oil filter adapter? What do i need to look out for when removing this adapter? My truck is a 4x4 and I not sure if all dmaxs have the adapter. Thanks for any help,God knows I will need it. Thanks Cleve

oil filter adapter removal

Looks like luck is on your side, much easier to reseal adpater than rear
cover housing. All duramax diesels use same oil filter adapter and yes there is a oil cooler assembly inside-much improved over auxillary mounted
cooler and hoses like the old 6.5s. Removal is pretty straight forward. Remove five oil filter adapter and oil cooler assembly bolts. Will need to
replace engine coolant feed pipe o-ring, two o-rings that mount against
block, and both seals for adapter to rear cover housing. Just perform usual
inspection of componants making sure nothing is cracked, if ok reseal and
recheck. Good luck and let us know if leak is corrected!
