SM465 vs. NV4500

Currently doing a 6.5 turbo diesel build and decided I would buy a 5 speed nv4500 for it instead of the old muncie 465 4 speed transmission that was in it. Reason being because I would top out at about 68 mph pushing 3500 rpm. Ran into a bit of a problem though and got to thinking that the nv4500 length might be longer than the muncie 465. If anyone has done this tranny swap before let me know what you had to do to combat this issue. Im thinking shortening the driveshaft would work if in fact the nv4500 is a bit longer. Just let me know what y'all did and any other issues you might have run into with this type of build. Thanks!

2wd or 4 wd??

4wd, ends up being within 1/2", fine to reuse stock driveshafts(double check u-joints-they do make conversion joints if one doesn't match up.)

2wd, there are a couple different style tail housings, I have seen a long tail housing and short tail housing. I think the short tail housing is 3" longer then the sm465. Beyond that I can't help, don't have too many 2wd vehicles.

Its 4wd. The u-joints shouldn't be a problem. The transfer case and everything splined up with the nv4500 so I should be alright as far as all that goes. The only other problem that I ran into the other night was that I am gonna have to get a new bell housing. The bolt holes were about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch off. Guess I'll have to find one that will bolt up to a 6.5 td

New or old body style?(is the front driveshaft on the drivers or passenger side?)

New style you'll have no problem using any bell housing off of any GM NV4500, if it's the old square body style with the driveshaft on the passenger side, you will run into clearance issues with the external slave of the '92-'95/6 bell housings,

And as I was writing I recalled another little issue, the bell housing to transmission bolt pattern changed on the NV4500, I think the change happened at the same time they went to internal slave cylinders. It wasn't much, but enough to cause headaches.

It would be a new body style. Front driveshaft is on the drivers side. Your saying the bell housing to tranny bolt pattern is different from the SM465? That shouldn't be too much of an issue. Just new bolts and lock washers.

The sm465 bell housing is narrower at the transmission side, so you would need to drill and tap the NV4500 for bolts in order to mount a SM 465 bell housing to the NV 4500.

The NV 4500 also has 2 bolt patterns based on early design and later design-bolts and nuts would likely work in this case.

Backing up to your second post, which bolt holes are you referring to being 1/2"-3/4" off?

And what year NV4500 do you have? If you know.

Ok, so I know it has been done, I personally haven't done it so take it as you will, I would carefully drill and tap the nv4500 to match the bolt pattern on the sm465 bellhousing. If your not comfortable doing that (there is a risk of drilling through the case and making a hole) then a new bell housing will do the trick- any from a 92-95 would work perfect.

Yeah I don't know if I would be comfortable doing that it is worth a shot, but if I mess it up I would be out about a grand. Would it have to be a chevy bell housing from those years or would a dodge bell housing match up? I wouldn't think it would, but wondering if you know more.
