1997 Chevrolet 6.5L Diesel

1997 Chevrolet 6.5L Diesel
Owned since March 2006, purchased bone stock with 154,000 miles.

As of December 12th, 2009 it has 207,068 miles.

Dyno'd it at Danville Performance on April 14th, 2007, at the Hoosier Black Out Dyno Day.

216.85HP/428.64TQ (50% load on dyno, let out early, too much load for engine)
222.34HP/418.87TQ (35% load)
225.38HP/419.81TQ (40% load)

  • 6.5 Turbo Diesel, L65 HO VIN F
  • Peninsular Diesel marine intake. Re-tapped for boost sensor, boost gauge, and IAT sensor
  • Stant Lever-Lift 16lb coolant reservoir cap, along with 3 bottles Redline Water Wetter
  • Dual stainless steel 180 degree thermostats
  • Heath Diesel Heavy Duty fan clutch
  • AC Delco 11g glow plugs
  • Removed vacuum pump
  • Shorter serpentine belt, 1.5 inches shorter than stock. Goodyear part# 4060995
  • Removed hood blanket
  • Factory GM-8
  • JDM Sport Top Mount Intercooler. 2 1/2" inlet/outlet, 22" long (28" overall) x 7" wide x 2.5" thick. JDM Sport intercooler pipes, stainless T-clamps replaced ... replaced T-clamps with screw type hose clamps. T-clamps were causing a V in the coupler between the ends, under the screw. This caused multiple leaks. No more leaks with standard screw hose clamps.
  • Homemade manual boost controller, set for 15 PSI for towing/racing. 10-11 PSI for everyday usage.
  • Replaced boost solenoid with 50 ohm 10 watt resistor. Removed solenoid, plate it was on, and vacuum lines
Fuel & Tuning:
  • Heath reflashed PCM (65hp/130ft-lbs)
  • Optic bump - TDCO = -1.6
  • Brand new Delphi fuel injectors (drivers side only at the moment)
  • Hi-flow intake with Fram Boost filter
  • New PMD and extension harness, mounted on homemade aluminum plate heatsink mounted behind bumper
  • #9 Resistor
  • SSDiesel Supply 409 Stainless Steel, mandrel bent, 3" downpipe, 4" full exhaust, straight through muffler, no cat
  • 2.25" SS mandrel bent x-over pipe
  • Heath PCM also shortens shifts times and increases line pressure for firmer shifts
  • 4X4
  • 8 lugs
  • 4L80-E tranny
  • 14 Bolt Rear - 10.5" Ring Gear, 3.73, Factory Locker - G80
Suspension, wheels & tires:
  • 2" Aluminum wheel spacers in the rear
  • RS5000 Ranchos all around
  • ProComp add-a-leafs, added 1.5" to rear height
  • Replaced leaf spring u-bolts when installing Add-a-leafs. Advanced part# 94032
  • Futura Dakota LT tires, LT265/75/16, Load Range C
  • Silverado Package - Blue
  • Summit Racing Ram Air hood - functional for intercooler
  • 'Shaved' 2500 emblems from doors and large metal Chevrolet plate from tailgate. Replaced with full set of 2003 2500HD Silverado badges, doors, both small tailgate badges.
  • Detriot Diesel badges on fenders
  • Extang Black Max tonneau cover
  • Auto Ventshade Vent Visors
  • Clear corner/marker lenses
  • Replaced worn out factory 4X4 stickers with NBS 4X4 stickers
  • Chrome 6.5 Emblem
  • Red 'Shocker' sticker on driver side rear window
  • Red Odie sticker on passenger side rear window
  • Glowing Eyes chrome skull hitch insert
  • Chevy bowtie sticker across top of windshield
  • Wired for 4 and 7 pin trailers
  • 36" DieselPlace.com sticker on the bug shield
  • 9" DieselPlace.com sticker over the tailgate handle
  • Silverado Package - Blue
  • Autometer triple gauge pod pillar mount
  • Autometer EGT gauge, pre-turbo
  • Autometer Boost gauge, tapped into upper intake
  • Autometer Tranny temp gauge, sensor installed in pan, near dipstick
  • Purple neons under dash
  • Sony Xplod FW-570 CD Player, detachable face
  • Clarion Sirius Satelite Radio, detachable face
  • Prodigy Brake Controller
  • Fire extinguisher mounted below drivers side rear window
  • 6 cell Mag Lite mounted to rear of cab between headrests, below rear sliding window
  • 1200/3200 watt power inverter hardmounted and hardwired. remote on/off switch and remote dual outlets mounted on bottom of back side of the center console.
  • Averages 17-18 mpg - unloaded, 10-12 mpg towing 4 tons
  • Oil - 4 quarts Rotella T Synthetic 5w-40, 3 quarts Rotella T 15w-40, STP Oil Additive - Blue Bottle
  • Fuel additive mixture for every tank - 8oz. 2-cycle oil + 8oz. Power Service Diesel Additive
  • AC Delco PF35L oil filter
  • High idle switch, 1070 RPM
  • OBD-II laptop monitoring system, ELM327 v1.0a, using PCMSCAN 4.0, ProScan 1.43, Digimoto 4.03
  • GM Enhanced OBD-II data acquistion, using laptop and PIC chip cable from http://www.obd-2.com
General Maintenance:

(above and beyond oil changes and usual stuff)
  • Replaced crank pulley
  • Replaced alternator
  • Cleaned out and the junk in the radiator area and cleaned the fins of all 5 coolers
  • Replaced broken transmission dipstick tube
  • Added extra 8g ground wire from drivers side battery to ABS mounting bracket
  • Replaced blower motor and blower motor resistor pack
  • Replaced passenger side door pin switch
  • Replaced CDR valve
  • Replaced power steering pump and pulley
  • Replaced Idler pulley
Future Plans:
  • Amsoil bypass oil filtration system, waiting in box
  • 2/0 battery cable upgrade - about 75 feet waiting
  • Fuel system upgrade - as listed below in green
  • Perma-Cool 81074 Fuel Filter/Water Separator Kit, waiting in box
  • HO lift pump
  • Relay control for lift pump
  • Boost regulated boost control, to replace the spring regulated boost control
  • Custom modded Xbox with 8 or 9 inch LCD visors
  • Replace timing chain/gears

Radrick Nice truck!! I just purchased mine two months ago with 148k miles bone stock and i would love to get it as nice as yours. What did you use for the pmd? did you use stock one with a just extend the harness or heath? Mine uses some oil and bill heath says it has to much blow by but it runs GREAT. The oil cooler is leaking and I'm not sure how much of the oil usage is from that. 01-31-2008
