First thing...Never Use ether. If the glow plugs come on and ignite the ether the sound you would hear wouldn't be good news. I would start at the fuel filter housing. Prime it up and then check to see if it will start. If you are confident you are getting fuel then start looking at fuses. Stay with basic troubleshooting.
Requirements for diesel engines to start is air and fuel and of course the ECM.
I also have to ask is if Jasper sent you a period correct motor. You should have a LBZ motor or...a LLY depending on your VIN. Wrong motor could be a issue as well.
