Maybe a soon to be LML owner?

New to the forum and this is my first post here. I have a pending offer on a 2013 Duramax, and it was just inspected this morning. Mechanic however identified some issues:

- differential fluid is black, and has shavings
- alternator output low

I think I have the alternator thing figured out, that it is a variable alternator, depending on what the vehicle requires.

I am stuck on the differential fluid thing. If it was maintained like he says it was, then should it be black and have shavings? (nearly at 100,000 miles, so practically due again, and would have had to have been changed at 50,000 miles if I'm not mistaken).

Thoughts?

2013 3500, crew cab, long box, 4x4. Apparently used itnlight construction for building small utilities enclosures. Apparently rarely truly off road driven and almost never in 4 low. Everything else checked out.

Just shy of 100,000 miles on the clock.
