Will front air dam effect engine cooling?

I am sure this has been asked before, but I am new to this....
I have always liked the looks of the OEM front air dam normally found on the 1500's. My question is, will putting one one on my K3500 TD adversely effect engine cooling? I am assuming that they didn't install it on a 3500 for a reason. The reason may have been as simple as it was or no value on a 3500, but if the reason was it would adversely effect cooling I won't put one on.
Any opinions?

If done correctly, it can improve cooling. If you fabricate one yourself, put it in line with the core support. This will create a high pressure zone in front of the radiator and a low pressure zone behind it, improving air flow. I fabbed one for my 2500 using left-over rubber from my Rock Tamers, and out of aluminum for my Nova.
