I'm surprised they allow that - I do not think the same exemptions apply here in Ontario.

I suspect that more then a few scenarios where someone was utilizing this exemption, and then had a disagreement with the authorities about what "Is" and "is not" farm use have ended up in court. There is a LOT of room for interpretation in the law when it's that fuzzy.

generally dyed fuel is about 20 cents cheaper. i think last time i filled up (although i use a cardlock so i dunno the price at the time) was about a buck a litre, or even 98 cents.

But if you use an all electric vehicle or even a hybrid, you are using the state and federal highway system without paying your fair share of road tax.

How is that fair?

No the same exemptions do not apply to farmers in Ontario. I know a few people that are farmers and get stopped every so often and get there tanks dipped. Any dyed diesel in the tank they get fined. They most of the will check trucks that are labeled farm.

That's a very good question!

In the case of the Nissan Leaf, for example, it's *entirely* electric. At least the Volt uses gasoline sometimes (once it runs out of electric range) so there is some taxes collected there.

I suspect that there are exemptions in place specifically for this purpose though, or at the very least, big enough holes in the tax law to allow electric vehicles to drive through.

rules vary everywhere so there is no simple answer.

the posted Sask rules omit a lot of reasons to have died fuel in Alberta. any construction equipment, reefers, drilling rigs, trains, etc.

here dyed off road is priced, less the road tax. Farm Fuel is the same with some extra tax discounts like no GST

here, I've seen them dip the family farm car with regular plates.

Around here they dont dip tanks very often, They swab the inside of your tip to find any residue of red dye then send it off to the state. If it clears, nothing happens. If not, you get a little letter in the mail for court

So what if your in Moab off-roading? Can you use dyed diesel then? I've got dual tanks in the hummer and this is what I was planning on doing next year. Hopefully they have an off road diesel pumps close to Moab.

If off roading then yes you can. I suggest not running the red dye in the stock tank. May take some time for it to clear out enough. If you setup to run off the aux tank be sure the return fuel line is also piped back to the aux tank when running off road. Doubt you have much red dye fuel return to stock tank to make much difference during the swap over.
