LML Transfer Case Capacity

I ran into a little issue when changing out the transfer case fluid today. Which capacity is correct for the LML? I found 1.5 qts, 2 qts and a YouTube Video where the mechanic used 3 qts. In the 04 it was fill till it overflows but at three qts it does not overflow and I stopped there to avoid an over fill situation.

So what the heck capacity is correct and am I ok at 3 qts or do I need to drain some out?

Thanks

Thanks. I have all of that. As I mentioned that and various other data give various numbers of how much should go in the transfer case. From 1.5 qts to 3. I think another version of what you posted has 2.3 pints or some off the wall number.

I would put more in, until some fluid comes out the fill port.

Short of putting in fluid in another hole, such as the speed sensor port, the vehicle isn't particularly level, or you fill it with a tube close to the size of the fill port (I've done this) so it can't readily come out, you can't overfill it. You squirt in an ounce of fluid, and an ounce runs out the fill port.

The only other place for the fluid to go, is the void in the transmission adapter or into the transmission, and the TC input shaft seal would need to be really bad for that to happen while you are filling it.

I used the speed sensor port and filled 3 qts as was suggested in a YouTube video. I can't see where that amount is going to cause a big problem.

You are free to do whatever you want, but the TC was designed to be filled to a certain level, which is the fill-port level.

Over-filling could result in the oil being aerated too much, for example.

You might want to take a look at the 2014 Transfer case. It there is a fill port other than the speed sensor opening I cannot find it and it is not indicated on any of the material that I have looked at. All refill instructions say fill through the speed sensor port.

If you find something different let me know.

Yep. After looking again, the fill plug was right in front of my face. So I am going to open and let it drain to that level.

Actually, I just assumed it had one, as I missed paying attention to what truck you had, and was going off how the TC in my truck was setup.
