Smoke

New, not sure this is the place but will ask,. 06 C5500 LLY. 52k miles, been running fine and still does except on weekend trip pulling a 24' trailer with race car on 2 long steep hills while in 4th gear at 3000 RPM about half way up it started smoking grayish smoke bad. In 700 mile trip only two times it did it. Even dropping down to 4th and at 3000 on other grades no smoke. Where do I start.

Could the air filter need replaced? Your scenario is when the air intake flow is the highest.

Thanks, I wish it was that easy. Had the filter out yesterday, like new. I've only had it since January. But I've driven it 5k and no problems. I completely serviced it before driving it any and did check air filter which looked new but pulled it out yesterday. I've been up mountains on I24 in TN running 3000+ for Mike after mile and no smoke. Then this weekend first long hill it started, stopped and check it over, nothing. Dive 550 miles fine until it another long upgrade and did it again. Only thing I did add a little oil to it before leaving. It was bearing the low mark. But I've checked it and not over full, near top mark but not over. Thanks for any help. Got other trips up and would like to solve. Truck has not been modified in any way.

Since had no luck finding any help here or from any local mechanics mainly because there is no CE light or codes, I'm taking a shot and replacing the air filter. It looked new but may not been as good as I thought after getting it out the second time. Trip this weekend but not pulling a trailer. Will get back when I know something. Thanks again.

Along with changing the air filter, if you are not using any fuel additives, I would also add a dose of Power Service in the grey bottle to the tank and see if that helps some.

Replaced air filter, added injector cleaner. Drove for about 350 miles. No smoke but this was not pulling my race trailer. Will be going to Bowling Green KY next weekend pulling and will see as will be going up the same hill I first had the problem. Hope all is well. Will report back.

Been awhile getting back, but seems to still have problem. Did learn from being on same hill and with trailer that after it dropped back to 4th gear if I kept rpms under 2700 it did not smoke. This is driving me crazy. Talked with well respected diesel shops, a shop that specializes in Duramax and is a noted tuner. No one has an answer, say drive it and see if it gets worse. I have long trips planned and don't want to see it worse 1000 miles from home. Also like I said no check engine light and have scanned it and ever thing is within acceptable range.

I tried to stay away from 3k rpms as much as possible. I had a 5 speed with 4.41 rear axle. A lot of the 2006 models had a 4.87 rear axle. Which requires higher rpms. I wonder if when you see the gray smoke you are having high EGT's. That's when my LLY would smoke.

Don't think it has the lower gear. It runs [email protected] The puzzling thing to me it seems to have just started that. I'll just keep an eye on it. Thanks for the reply.
