So here is more to the tailgate project while primer is curing so it doesn’t shrink. It’s a tailgate drop assist drag gear and torsion rod, to help raise it also, from a newer body style GMC Denali trucks tailgate. The only thing that I’ve seen as a tailgate assist kit for our trucks are the ugly strut shock kits. So now the weight of this tailgate won’t slam down when opened and especially help since the truck sits up about 4-5” higher than before I started. I’ve also got back to shaping the emblem to the tailgate. I still have a little metal working to do on the tailgate some so there’s very little body filler. Also figure out where I’m going to do my cutouts behind the emblem for the blue LED lights to shine through the plexiglass that will be in between the emblem and the tailgate.

I started the sanding process. I sprayed everything with a guide coat and let dry overnight first. Sanding with 320 to begin. This will be very time consuming. But it’s coming along nicely.

Ok guys and gals. I’m still here. Still working. I keep bouncing back and forth on a few things. But as of now I have the cab and doors fully sanded with 320. I’ll spray 2 more coats and hit it with 800 before I paint.
I’ve also been working on the tailgate and emblem. I finally have the emblem to the shape I want it. There’s a couple of low spots in the tailgate I need to metal work still, so there’s little body filler, and also do the cutouts for the blue LED lights to mount under the emblem. I’m also working on fabricating a slow tailgate assist torsion bar and (drag)gear, out of a 2017 Denali tailgate, to work like it’s designed in this tailgate. I also notched out an area in the middle of the tailgate, at the bottom, for the rear view camera to be discretely mounted.

Love the project, was wondering where you got the center console from?

Thank you rjt1050. It’s been a fun project. Still is. A LOT left to do too.

Hung some plastic again to keep the overspray off of other parts. Getting ready for two more coats of primer. Then paint hopefully next weekend.
