DOT compliance bills

I was told a DOT # is free?!

I haul maybe once in a blue moon with my truck... commercially. Most of my hauls are for personal or family use. I was pulled over once by DOT police towing an empty trailer and I made the mistake by saying I sometimes tow for my business. However, this is my personal truck.
My state has a funny ruling where any vehicle over 8000 gvw needs a "commercial" plate, regardless if it's registered personally.

Anyways, that throws a red flag on the DOT radar even if I hook up to a 800# trailer....

So, I'm constantly getting bills and notices via email and phone calls from UCR, FMCSA, biennial update collector, motor carrier processor, even some states are sending me bills claiming I need to pay a tax if I do or don't transit through their state....

Yea those state bills are *likely* IFTA tax claims. Don't pull over 26k. Under 26, no ifta sticker req.

Any vehicle 13,001 gvrw and over is req. To have a commercial tag IF you use it for business. That's federal. Your state may be a bit more harsh at 8k. What state if I may ask???

Need to check your local laws for sure.

When you pass a weigh station and the little sign sais "truck must enter weigh station"... It's a good idea to do it. Most of my encounters with the dot have been friendly. But I was always within compliance.

Just stick "NOT FOR HIRE" on the side of your truck. Don't do business unless you know what your getting into. Doing commercial hauling without a dot and mc# can get you in alot of trouble man. Need to go to a local truck stop and talk to some owner ops. They'll fill you in... but get yourself out of the line of fire first.

You need to clear that up or they will most likely suspend your license. You won't get a notice until you've already been tossed in. If your not there already....

Oh... and nothing from the fed. Govt is free. Especially not something as lucrative as commercial freight.... dot# mc# and authority are $$$ so is the insurance $$$$$$ you need to do your research before you get into trouble.

And... above all... don't take my word for it.

LEGAL DISCLAIMER. I AM NOT LEGAL ADVICE!!!!!

When I drive commercially. I work for someone else who already has all that legal mess set up so I don't have to worry about it.

Merely a suggestion, “NOT FOR HIRE” stickers regardless. Stay away from dot at all costs. Just a suggestion. They’re like all other cops. Most suck, some are okay, and a couple are cool. The regular inspectors (non LEO) are like lady cops, bend over and get ready.

The mess you got into with the fmcsa bills is puzzling. If you do not have a commercial license stay under 13t. Unless your exempted by hauling a non commercial rv (race teams=commercial). Running 13t you are required to have a class A license. Even if it’s just lumber for your deck. Unlikely to get caught, but if you do some states will rough you up.
