addition of exhaust brake?

Apologies if this is not in the right forum!

Have an '02 stock engine in a 3500 CC DRW. Towing a fifth wheel trailer that loaded is pushing the limits of the towing capacity (but not over). My concern is hauling through mountains and having stopping power. I NEVER haul w/o it being in tow/haul mode, but am concerned about overworking brakes on long/steep downhills. Am I overthinking this?

If an engine brake system is an option, which would you recommend and why? Thx.

I ran a BD Diesel exhaust brake on my LB7 and LLY. If I still had a LB7 I would continue to run with the exhaust brake. It makes a worthwhile difference and saves the truck and trailer brakes if something happens and you really need them. There are others like the PacBrake. I have experience only with the BD.

Was your LB7 stock, and was the brake all you added, or would you add tuning also?

Back then I ran an Edge Juice with Attitude. EB worked fine with or without the Edge. Tuning is optional if you want a little more performance. Today I wouldn't consider anything other than EFILive.

Forgive me for sounding ignorant, but would you explain how you utilized the exhaust brake. Is there an activation switch you just flip when you feel you need it?

Why are you a fan of EFI Live over others? Thx.

The BD kit comes with a on/off switch and a throttle switch. If you want to use it you need to turn it on. Then it is only active when the throttle is at idle. Any throttle application disables it. Also works with cruse control.

I used EFILive for the LLY and LBZ and did my own tuning. Being able to custom tune at the ECM level is far better than canned tunes or in the case of the Edge Juice manipulates signals outside the ECM. When I ran the Edge EFILive wasn't available. Also with a variable vane turbo (LLY and on) with EFILive the ECM can be programed with a turbo vane brake.
