Use the factory hitch or change to a Curt class V hitch??

So in inspecting the truck I just got I noticed that there are only 3 bolts holding the factory hitch on. I think when the rear bumper was replaced they didn't put in some of the bolts. Should I get new bolts and use the factory hitch or change to the Curt class V hitch. The heavyest I would pull is a 38' offshore boat that weighs about 15K on the trailer.

Without a doubt, get a new Curt Class V. Also, a very strong ball mount specifically sized (drop) for your truck and boat trailer setup.

I would hands down recommend a class V bumper pull receiver hitch and equally rated ball mount. Personally I went with Reese 2.5" and the Titan ball mount.

Just to clairify. My truck has the factory frame mounted hitch. It is of the style that bolts to the frame and the bumper. I think from the factory it is rated for 17Klb trailer 1700 lb tongue. The Curt one I am looking at is rated for 20k lb trailer/ 2700 lb tongue. So the recommendation is to get the Curt one?

Check the sticker on the hitch. I was shocked when I saw I had a class III hitch from the factory (Max trailer 7500#; w/ weight distributing hitch 12000#, max tongue 1000#; w/ wd 1500#. Search "OEM hitch sucks"

If I were using the hitch much I'd replace it with a real class V

The hitch has a 2 1/2 receiver.

Yep, the factory hitches have been greatly upgraded since the early days. I know my 2008 has what looks like bolt holes but there was never anything in them. I would take a trip to your dealer and duck under a new truck on the lot and see how many bolts it has.
