Back up Camera via CTS-2 or Radio ?

Looking for a back-up camera set up for my soon to be delivered Suburban and was curious on some feedback on which route to go ?

CTS-2 which I plan on getting in the near future? Use this as the camera screen and if so whats a good resolution camera type to go with this set up ?

Or replace the stock deck with a aftermarket deck that has a video input along with a nice size screen ?


Any pros/cons are much appreciated, just un sure which route I wanna go...

You are talking about the '98 Suburban?

I've got a Pioneer AVH4000NEX, with a Pioneer ND-BC6 backup camera, and they work well together and produce a good picture [short of flaring when a really bright light is in the picture]. I bought a harness adapter that plugs into the existing harness [PAC Radio 3] so I didn't have to cut into the trucks wiring at all, the adapter could produce the needed backup and parking brake signals.

I've also installed the Insight CTS2 [with the pod for my truck from them as well]. It also works well.

I definitely like that the radio has a significantly larger screen than the CTS2, and I'm not sure how soon the CTS2 will be able to display the backup camera image [it takes about 30 seconds or more to boot up to display engine parameters, and I don't know if it will display the camera image before it fully boots up]. As well, all the wiring is nicely in the dash this way, while there would be more wires hanging out outside the dash for the CTS2.

Thanks for the reply Davester, no its not for the 98 truck, just recently sold that one and currently waiting on the 2004 model to be delivered. Didnt even think about the boot time delay on the CTS2 so thanks for pointing that out, read alot about it taking a while to boot so I agree it may be best to run it off the radio as well as getting the larger viewing area like you mentioned. And it will enable the newer deck with some additional bells and whistles compared to the stock deck

The CTS2 MIGHT show the backup signal without having to fully boot up, I have never hooked it up to see. The Pioneer radio does take a few seconds to also boot up [maybe 5, WAY faster than the CTS2], but displays the backup signal without needing to complete the process.

And if you do replace the stock radio in the '04, I highly recommend buying a harness adapter instead of hacking up the wiring harness of the truck. Depending on what features your truck and radio have, the adapter might run $100, but you will save that in time and aggravation.

With my install, the adapter basically had a 1-1 ratio of wires that had to be connected to the radio, and just plugged into the existing radio plug for the truck. The adapter even powers the backup camera [a single cable runs from the camera to the cab, which then splits for power and connecting to the radio's video in].

The other thing is to check that the adapter supports the power requirements of the radio. The online store I bought my radio from was going to throw in a 'free' cheap harness adapter with the radio, but it didn't support all the features of the truck/radio and also didn't supply enough power to the radio. The one I bought [PAC Radio 3 GMsomething or other] did supply enough power.

Thanks Dave, good to know about the different available adapters...I'm a firm believer in ya get what ya pay for and yeah plug and play is much less aggravating for sure ..not to mention my time being very limited for certain things.

I definitely think I'm going the radio route with the back-up cam and will leave the CTS2 a stand alone unit (maybe with the pod as well?) I'll have to read up a little more in depth on the wiring of the camera because I think it would be worth putting a separate power source into the mix besides the power signal from the radio and triggering the camera to turn on from the reverse circuit only, I think in addition to that having a separate toggle switch on the dash somewhere that enables me to turn the camera on for whatever reason while in the drivers seat and NOT only in reverse would be good here and there?Unless there are some radios that have that provision already there to use if needed?

I didn't explicitly notice this up front, but for the backup camera, I do like that there is just a single wire that is sealed all the way from the camera to the hookup's in the cab, so I don't have to worry about making water-safe connections at the back of the truck. The harness adapter I bought also provides a parking-brake signal [needed for enabling playing videos if you want] and a reverse signal, so the backup camera comes on automatically.

I think I just powered the camera all the time, just because the camera is spec'd to take 1A, and the harness adapter supplied enough for both the camera and the radio, and I'd have to rig up a relay to work with the reverse signal from the harness adapter.

I'm also going to [eventually] rig up a switch to turn on the backup camera while driving [which means you need to either power the camera all the time or run a switched power line from the cab].
