I think that the side wall plys are weaker on the "8ply" tires. You do know that they don't actually have 8 plys in an "8 ply" tire any more than a 10 ply tire has 10 plys, right? The weaker sidewall let the tire flaten out more and heat up under a load. Heating leads to blowouts.

For me the D load tires are weaker sidewalled and feel squirmy under load. Just preference.
