what is the difference between a gooseneck trailer and a fifth wheel.

Different style of hitch. Fifth wheel looks like a mini version of what you see on large trucks - large flat plate that the load rests on and the hitch locks into. Gooseneck fits to what amounts to a hitch ball mounted in the bed of the truck.

Fith wheel is what u see on most campers. Gooseneck is like the horse and race car trailers.
