Broken transmission mounts/broken engine mounts

Maybe not the right forum..

I drive an 06' 8.1L Auto extended cab 8' bed 2500
Truck has 25000 miles and is used to maintain mountaintop radio sites. This truck is loaded with up to 1000lbs and used off road almost every day.

Towing is limited to a few 100 miles towing 10,000lb sno cat.

I have only driven the truck off road 4 times.

My supervisor does most of the driving and has been driving the truck since new.

Well... about 4-5 weeks ago we both noticed the transfer case shifter rattling slightly. The cross member has take a number of hits from rocks, but has just been dented up.

Saturday night I went to a site that is not very bad.. Only thing I hit was a cattle guard at 25mph that I probably should have been going slower... No tires in the air, no big whump, no metal sounds.

Get to the site and I hear the fan hitting the shroud. DOH!

Took it to the dealer. Bent transfer case//transmission cross member (3" deflection) Rear engine mounts broken. Fan clutch worn out from blade being stuck.

Not sure what advice you are seeking, but these HD trucks don't have a lot of ground clearance for serious off-roading.

It would have to be a pretty serious hit to bend that crossmember 3 inches.

I am just shocked at the damage. $$ isn't too bad, @ $900.00 but I think that its BS that I might get blamed for the catastrophic failure..

Why would you hit a cattle guard going that fast......Would you with your truck.......

I drive over cattle guards all day on the "highway" at 55-60mph in my own vehicle.

Cattle guards are all over the west. State highways, county roads and alot of other places. Speed limit in some places is 65mph....

This one cattle guards was on a dirt road. I drive sometimes 20-40 miles on dirt or off road to reach some of the sites. Sites range in elevation from 4000 feet to over 11,000 feet. Some sites are not even accessible by ground and we are helicoptered in.

Well the cattle guards around here.....I would keep it under 5mph.....

You are being blamed for bottoming out the truck, not catastrophic failure.

Just explain what happened, an accident is an accident, no big deal.

Sounds like the crossmember was just weakened by all the hits. They really need a lifted truck for that kind of work.
