Buying an 04’ a good choice?

Hi guys. I’ve been driving Chevy trucks my whole life, but never owned a diesel yet. I hear older Duramax can be better than the new ones because of lack of emissions on the older ones.
I hear the 06-07’ are the best, but I found an 04’ that I really like. Are the 04’ that much worse than an lbz?
Also, me being in the rust belt I’m looking down south as trucks that old are rusted to hell up here in Wisconsin. Anybody know how to find a gear head out of state to go check out a truck? Mine is in the Tempe Az area.
Thanks!

2main issues with gen1 Duramax

Injectors: poor initial design. Horribly engineered in terms of maintenance 18hr 3800.00 * repair if needed.

4x4? There’s a pump rub concern on transfer case.

Be sure to search this forum, and ask sellers about!

That being said, you should be able to get into a gen1 truck at a decent price.

I couldn’t afford the price jump, hate payments, so ended up with my 2002 a couple years ago. Love it BTW!

It’s up to 330k miles now, still no problems with injectors or pump rub...knock on wood.

Thanks guys.
Yes it is a 4x4. I had the transfer case wear through on my ‘99 Suburban, if that is the same thing, so that’s good to know. I didn’t realize that they still had that problem in 04.
Thanks for the heads up on the injectors. After I started this post I found a mechanic down in Phoenix who is actually willing to go and test drive and check out trucks that I’m interested in. It’s not cheap, but cheaper than a plane ticket down there, and time off of work!
I’ll let him know of the injector issue, if he doesn’t already know.
I’m pretty much the same way. Looks like the lbz trucks are selling for quite a bit more than the older ones, and I just can’t spend that extra few thousand dollars right now.

If your mechanic doesn’t already know of the injector issues, then he is not who you want to be checking out a used duramax for you.

^^^ this.

And I searched for almost 2 years to find my 06 LBZ. Had plenty of chances for earlier models, just didnít want to have to deal with the crap shoot.
