There were a few that had that happen but on both the dealerships refused to install them.

So what's the advantage of having them?

There is no real advantage. They are required on trucks over a certain weight class, but the logic of having them escapes me. Their name implies they are for clearance, but I'm not sure what/why that means. Most of us just like the looks.

If the truck were used as a chassis cab they would be required for certain sizes. For a pickup configuration they are not a requirement. I suspect that GM offers them on all the trucks because they have to have them on some of the chassis and it just helps to increase the volume of them and reduces the price for GM.

Clearance lights go back to trucking days. They were the lamps atop the trailers so us old farts could see "clearance" at night. Now I think they call than cab marker lamps or something like that. I love mine and won't get another truck without them!

They are there to signal a vehicle that is over 80" wide which is why you always see them on duallys. Guys like myself who tow a lot like them because it signals your rig is over 80" wide. It doesn't really make sense anymore because the new HDs are 80.12" wide, without dualls of course.

X2.....so I guess it boils down to aesthetics and I do like the way they look but I won't let it become a deal breaker if I can get a good deal on a '15
