Transmission Cooler Protection

I decided after already catching a rock in my new transmission cooler that I needed some protection. So I developed this prototype mesh screen that fills the opening in the bumper that allows airflow across the cooler.

I used a sheet of mesh that was painted black and is sold at Home Depot for keeping gutters from filling with debris. The mesh is about 1/4 openings and it is semi hard wire, but can be bent and cut easily. I drilled two holes on each side of the plastic inserts on either side of the opening. I used two body trim retaining pins (the ones that look like Christmas trees) on each side to secure the mesh inside the opening. I also inserted the mesh about 1/4" between the bumper and plastic housing on the bottom edge of the opening. The top side of the opening is not really secured to anything, but is stable due to the doubled up edge.

Not bad for about $3 and a couple hours of messing around. It helps to have an 11 year old to help insert the retaining pins, cause you have to come up from behind the bumper and between a small opening.

I am going to test this thing out for a while and see how it holds up. I might be ordering some high quality automotive steel mesh and making something a little nicer. For now, at least I have some protection.

When I went to bed last night, I decided how I will approach a revised mesh screen update. There are four bolts (two per side of the opening) that are used to support the plastic inserts that house the bumper sensors. I am going to back them out and add some brackets with a welded nut on the backside to them to support a heavier automotive steel mesh. This will provide a firmer mount and I am goint to be able to use some stainless or chrome bolts to attach from the front side, rather than trying to come up from the bottom/back.

With a stronger mount and heavier mesh, it should stand up to road debris and small birds. The problem with the heavier mesh is the specs say it is up to 60-70 percent open and so I want to make sure whatever I use that their is adequate airflow. The opening is larger than the cooler anyway, so I don't think it will be a big concern.

Hey AXE, what did you end up with on this? Did you try your second idea above? I was hoping the aftermarket would have something out quickly, but haven't seen anything yet.

So far nothing new to add. I had to shift gears and get my lift, wheels, fender flares, and assist steps done. I have some fabrication work to do on the assist steps to get them wheel to wheel. Not sure I will get back to it for a while yet.

I did see some more of that gutter material with a tighter 1/8" mesh at Lowes. It would look nicer, stop more stuff, and seemed a little more rigid. I would use that for a quick fix.

I found some different mesh from a comoany called McNichols. It would be nice, but they selll in large sheets and I don't want too much left over. They have alot of styles.

I wouldn't hold your breath with the aftermarket. I have since looked at alot of 13 and 14 models and haven't seen anything on any trucks and most of them have a lot of dings in the cooler.

I guess the dings do not seem to cause problems. I just don't like the idea of not protecting it.

I did email an aftermarket company that makes grilles and inserts, and this was the response

"We have a 2015 Chevy HD in the shop now developing the bumper insert. We also are finalizing a upper bolt-over grille for the truck.

Please watch our website, as the grilles should be listed shortly.

Thank you for the inquiry."

Thinking I may do the cheap gutter fix for now, and see what they come up with. Not sure they are a sponsor on here , so I probably shouldn't post the site.

PM me the information. I would buy one if it looks nice, mounts solidly, made from good materials, and isn't terribly expensive (I think $100-125) is about right.

Rigid Industries makes some cool grills and inserts with lights, but I am not sure that would work in front of the cooler. RBP does as well.

I'd be interested as well.

I think the openings on the 15s are bigger, your going to catch more stuff. If you live in grasshopper country that will beat your cooler up by August. Definitely vulnerable.
