I also would be interested. Down here in Florida we have to worry about the dreaded 'Love Bugs'. They can clog your radiator, transmission cooler and corrode your paint. I have a small mesh screen that is not secured but keeps the bugs out and does not seem to affect temperatures.

wsteward,

I looked up the love bug.........what a PIA that sounds like. I definitely think a tighter weave would be needed for you to ward off those hoards of bugs. Looks like yours would do the trick.

I feel like a 1/8" to 3/16" hole would be best for all around applications. The problem with the real tight mesh screen is that the wire is so fine, it becomes flimsy. Maybe a two part screen could be developed that had an option to bolt on a tighter screen to the front of a heavier rear screen. It would make cleaning easier too.

You can see in your picture that the bumper opening is narrower than the 2015s.

Yes very flimsy, that is why I have to have the frame attached (the white strip top & bottom). Unfortunately there is nothing on the inside to attached it. The idea of having a larger rigid backer screen with the tight mess attached would work great.

You're right the opening in my grill is a bit smaller than the 2015 but still large enough to let all sorts of hazards in...

My little prototype transmission coller protector is proving its worth. It may be time to make something more permanent. While I was on roadtrip this weekend through the mountains and along some wooded river corridors where we tend to see more bugs, I managed to collect quite a few larger bees and grasshoppers, as well as some unknown specimens. Clean up was easy with the hose and the cooler was pretty clean. I did have a few smaller bugs in the cooler, but no damage.

transmission Cooler protection

I used a slightly larger gauge of stainless steel mesh and covered the edges with cut red heater hose and filled it with Sika Flex wired it in place to stay on till it set up. it worked very well. I got that idea when I heard the one sided conversation of the parts manager telling a customer that they weren't going to warranty the intercooler which had just taken a latge stone! A place in medicine Hat had all sorts of gauge sizes ( fine window bug screen to much larger) of stainless steel mesh so this is what I will use when I get to there.

In storeage, passing the time while I getting the money ready for changing it to a daily driver. It actually runs like a diesel should! Can't wait to start engineering the additions for the truck!

I took about a 1" piece of granite landscape rock through my windshield the other day on the freeway. Some ****** landscaper with a heaping load of rock in his POS truck riding on the rear axle at 70 mph bouncing rocks at everyone.

I am sure that is going to cost me plenty.

While you can't protect everything, you may as well do what you can. That same rock through the cooler would likely result in pretty severe damage.
