Finally Found My New Duramax

After 6 weeks of hunting, I finally found my new 15 Chevy Duramax. I had a hell of a time finding a black exterior with a cocoa dune interior within 500 miles of me. There are probably 50 dealers within that distance of me. Anyway at 750 mikes lucky #7 John Elway came through for me and I found one equipped exactly the way I wanted in Denver. I will be flying in and driving it home Friday.

I just finished a second deal on a 15 and the best I could do was around 10% off MSRP. You are basically getting invoice price and the holdback allowance if you are working with a volume dealer. Not close to the deals I have seen in the past, but best I could do right now. I think there will be some GM cash in a few months and you'll get better prices, but the dealers don't have much to work with now.

Looking forward to adding some accessories and lifting it up.

Ying and Yang!

Here is a photo of the new truck along with the Tahoe I bought a few weeks ago. I flew up to Denver late Friday and drove it home Saturday. It was a long 12 hour drive but the new truck with all the creature comforts made it easy.

Well, I must say overall I am very happy with this truck. If I have as good of luck as I had with my previous Chevy's, then GM will have hit a grand slam.

I put on about 950 miles so far, so I got a little seat time to judge a few things. Here are some observations.

Likes:

Their isn't anything better than air conditioning blowing across your butt. The truck is very comfortable and put together with high quality materials. The truck is very quiet and you can hardly hear the motor running inside the cab. Having a 36 gallon tank is great. The MyLink system is very nice and easy to use. The power is smooth and plentiful and just keeps building even going up a 6% grade. The ride quality is superb, a little stiff over choppy pavement, but otherwise comfortable and make this thing handle like it is on rails at 80+ mph. The interior is much bigger, I think wider and longer. The phone system microphone and speakers make for nice call clarity. The brakes are stout. The steering is tight.

Dislikes:

I wish the radio and center console sat further towards the driver/passenger, as it is just out of reach (the Tahoe is easier to reach). I also wish the nav screen had a forward cant to it, so it would be easier to look at. I wish the outside camper mirrors were self dimming, you get a lot of headlights into the cab due to the size. The low beam headlights are not that great, it may just need an adjustment, but they are still just projector beam junk. The paint on my roof appears to have several pin hole size pit marks in it. The DEF tank is hideous and should be relocated in front of the fuel tank or at least kept from dropping below the frame. They should have had keyless start and electric adjustment on the steering column tilt, the Tahoe has these features and it should be on the high end trucks.

A few more dislikes include the flimsy skid plates you get with the Z71 package. You could make those out of a12 pack of aluminum beer cans. At least you get to drink the beer.

Also the transmission cooler is entirely exposed in the opening in the bumper. I already have a nice rock ding in that. Gonna have a to find a fix for that.

The Chrome on the edges of the bumper is very poor and the edges are rough and unfinished. I think I am going to paint mine, so not a big deal. You have to look close, but I notice this cleaning bugs off from my trip home.

I also highly recommend working with John Elway Chevrolet. They gave me a better deal than I even thought I was getting and they were very easy to work with. They gave me a ride from the airport and had me on the road fast. If you are interested in working with them, send me a pm and I'll give you the sales consultants name. She worked hard to get me the deal I wanted and was very responive.

I was able to average about 16 mpg (DIC was same as calculator) and I had some grades and wind in some areas. I was running between 70 and 90 mph. Not too bad. I never felt it go into regen mode and it never seemed to be down on power. It appears they have addressed some ofthe mileage and regen issues others have complained about over the last couple years.

Congrats on the truck! Couldn't agree more on the location of the DEF tank, they really need to come up with a more appealing location. Now get your lift, wheels and tires on so that bad boy looks proper!
