CP3 vs CP4

Did you know both can actually supply 29,000 psi in some applications? What does 29,000 psi mean; 500-600 RWHP before rail pressure starts to drop. What happens if you're dropping rail? You are losing HP, blowing smoke, creating heat.. There are some solutions to increasing rail pressure by adding a lift pump which we will discuss in another post.

Certainly the CP3 is the more popular high pressure pump on the market but that's partially due to the fact its used in 01-10 Duramax, 03 and up Rams. The CP4 though does flow about 20% less however it's still a more advanced pump with high pressure circuits.

But the CP4 is known for problems.... Well most problems can be avoided but there are some that just fail. While the failure rate is played up more than actual there's still a few steps that can reduce the chances. Good fuel is a great start to extending the life of your CP4. Regular fuel filter changes and fuel additives can help too. The less stress you place on your CP4 will aid as well, meaning running additional HP add a lift pump.
