I rolled around on a creeper under my truck while it was warm and throbbing. It sounds like it’s in the transmission, not the engine.

if the thumping sound is "normal", then that implies that everyone who should know about it already knows about it, and therefore the dealership/salesman had an obligation to disclose it to me before I bought the truck.

Then it would have been my choice to purchase a truck with a disturbing thumping sound, or not. Nobody makes any money if the customer walks away. So they lie.

These idiots need to be very careful with the word "normal", because it creates enormous legal risk for them. Knowingly selling a defective product without adequate disclosure to the prospective buyer....not good.

This truck was purchased at the largest GMC dealer west of the mississippi in Gilbert AZ.

It is our 5th diesel sierra 2500hd.
Sure can relate to your frustration I just received what I assume is a final response from the Dealership that Reads “It could be a very long time before we hear from GM on this issue sir”.

I am not a mechanic.
I bought an amazon stethoscope and a 20" piece of 1/4" aluminum tubing from ace hardware, removed the stethoscope bell/diaphram, and inserted the aluminum tubing into the rubber hose of the stethoscope.
today I spent an hour listening to the engine at idle, touching the end of the aluminum tubing to various parts of the engine.

I am probably wrong, but after spending all that time listening, the noise on my truck is not anything driven by or driving a belt or pulley -- so not fan clutch, not a/c compressor, not alternator, etc. It is not transmission nor anything underneath the truck.

The noise on my truck is sourced at the parts circled in the attached picture.
Again, I am not a mechanic and I might be wrong. In addition, the disturbing sound of my new truck at idle might not be the same disturbing sound on your truck.

see attached photo.

These are photos from the tear down the Dealership recently completed on my truck while reportedly adjusting the valve lash, if you are correct on your diagnosis you would think they would have observed the problem.
