Dual Alternators

I have searched the threads but couldn't find a definitive answer. I am kind of in a bind for a new truck and don't luxury of ordering at the moment. I am looking at new diesels on dealer lots and for the most part none of them have the "dual alternators". What is the major advantage/disadvantage to them?

I don't do any plowing, I have a 48' enclosed gooseneck trailer that I tow my cars with that I power with a generator.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

They are for if you have something on the truck that needs more power than what the single alternator can put out on a regular basis.

A plow would be an example of that, they take a lot of power to lift and angle them, and you do it fairly frequently.

It doesn't sound like it is an option that you need, for how you have described you would use the truck.

Most on the lots don't have the duals because most buyers don't need/want the duals.

The plow package includes the 220A instead of the 150A.

The dual (150A plus the 220A) alternaters would be for if you have electrical loads higher than what many/most snowplows.

Or if if you just want them 'cuz there available'.

Some would argue that 2 lightly loaded alternators is just introducing one more place for failure.
Some would argue the 2nd alternator is a built in spare.

As Davester posted, from your description of intended use it doesn't sound like it's a option you require.

Sounds like a fun car collection!

Simple answer, if you gotta ask why you would need them, then you don't.

When I ordered my 18 I did get the dual alternators. I have a 9.5' Fisher V plow which is why I opted for the dual alternators. On my old 06 LBZ with a smaller straight plow the single alternator and dual batteries worked OK in my opinion but not super. This truck works much better. Unless you have a big trailer with a boat load of chicken lights or some other high amp draw like a plow I wouldn't bother with the dual setup. It isn't a common option for dealer ordered trucks for their lot even though it isn't a lot of money. I think the dual option was 250 dollars when I ordered mine.

To late to edit my prior post, but I should have added that the 220A can be ordered separately (without the rest of the snowplow prep) if you want the bigger alternator but not the rest of the snowplow package.

When I ordered my ‘18, 3500 SRW I opted for the 220 amp single alternator because I only drive about 7 miles round trip to my shop and tow my 5th wheel other times. Didn’t see the need for duals for what I use it for, may not be the right but it was my reasoning and made sense to me...

Thanks for the feedback fellas. You've helped me realize I don't need them for what I will be using the truck for.

Thank you all for the feedback. Cheers.

I wanted dual alternators but I didn't want to wait for a build. My 2015 LML work truck was order with dual alts and the plow package, the plow doesn't even phase it. My 2017 has a 17k electric winch, my experience with winches has been that they need all the juice they can get. I buried the 17 in the mud/snow two weeks ago and the stock alt. kept up with the winch. I order and received a power bastard 250 amp alt. the other day, but after looking it over carefully, I decided the factory wiring wouldn't work as is. The factory alt is a Denso the power bastard is a 244 variant. The harness plug in was about 3 inches further away and there isn't that much slack in the factory wire. I returned it. Now we will see if they charge me their mandatory 20% restocking fee. If they do, stay tuned for a bashing!

Summit racing has the factory GM 220 amp alt for around 350.00 and I have looked at Mechman that uses Denso up to 370 amps.

I sent the 250 amp alt back to power bastards and paid the difference for a Denso 320 amp direct replacement alt. now just need a little time to put it in.

I'm looking for a new truck, my dealer has a Denali with dual alternators plus sunroof, problem is you can't get the snow plow package with sunroof, not sure why they even put them on.
